SKITCHIN was absolutely right with his post...don't believe me, watch MuchMusic (err, Fuse now) and watch them perform the acoustic version on the Sessions @ AOL series. Nate goes on TV and explains the meaning behind the song and why he wrote it. He claims it's just easier for him to write emotional songs if they are about "bad events"...in this case, JUST AS SKITCHIN SAID, the song is about a guy who is in Hell (literally) and is writing his "muse" (as Nate referred to her) because she is the only one who can possibly comprehend what he is going through. |

As far as I'm concerned, "Clumsy" could be considered a catchy song, because there's no way you can deny how easily that song gets stuck in your head...same with "Somewhere Out There." I played in a rock band for 3 years, and I know that when we wrote a song, we didn't plan for it to be catchy...but more often than not they turn out that way. Does it mean that these "catchy" songs mean less to the artist? No. Sometimes what makes a song so catchy is the sheer awe it leaves a listener in.
I was in awe the first time I heard this song. The chorus (yes, it's catchy, but who cares) is a very powerful statement about the world whether we realize it or not.
