The Kinks – Everybody's A Star (Starmaker) Lyrics 29 days ago
One of the more obscure songs by the Kinks, tho it was used for a TV ad c. 2015. Some of the melody is copped from the Who's "I Can't Explain". This was likely a 'tit-for-tat' choice on the part of the Kinks, as the debut Who single was clearly influenced by "You Really Got Me".

Don McLean – American Pie Lyrics 29 days ago
@[mulnix:50715] All art has meaning and subtext. What Don did hear was to use metaphors, rather than blunt explanation. So that merely means the listener has to 'dig deeper' and make connections to what Don was likely trying to say.

The Police – Invisible Sun Lyrics 29 days ago
@[deankavanagh1234:50714] Well I dont think the Police were ever the 'greatest band on earth', but they were certainly among the most popular, for a few years. But the police and U2 still sound like a fitting pairing, for that era. They were also both on the bill at Live Aid (tho not side by side), and co-artists with the "Do They Know it's Christmas" charity single.

It's odd that I should be the first person to comment on this song, but it's just about a masterpiece, so complex and so thrilling.

The Who – Don't Let Go The Coat Lyrics 1 month ago
@[Richie45069:50410] This song was actually released as a single, but it didnt do all that well. In truth, the music is not bad, but the lyrics are a different story. They are all over the place, and even contradictory. "It's easy to be sad when you lack a partner / but how would I react to a broken heart now" seems to be sung from the perspective of a lonely person who has mixed feelings about that state, but the lyrics 'I try to explain, but you never understand it / I want your body, but I cant just demand it" are more the property of someone actually in a relationship. Since Pete was married in 1981, the latter would make more sense. And 'just go blind and hang on' is one of the more perplexing lyrics Pete ever wrote.

@[vipergt196:50409] Well, he was married to Karen Astley at the time, and as far I know had no real marital 'rifts' at the time of this song being composed.

@[DJacques75:50408] it's an anomaly for the band, in that it's the only song written by Pete with lead vocals by John. He did a first-rate job, tho.

The Who – Tatoo Lyrics 1 month ago
An oddity in the Who's catalogue in that the live version (as heard on "Live at Leeds") is very good, but the original recording doesn't quite make it. The difference is Roger's full-bodied vocals on the live version, as well the more 'electric' feel. The lyrics are pretty amusing, but also a bit clunky. "Our old man didn't like our appearance / he said that only women wear long hair" is the type of lyric that doesn't easily roll off the tongue.

A real anamoly in their catalogue, its like a Grimm fairy tale set to music.

The Who – Pinball Wizard Lyrics 1 month ago
@[maxlookdj:50406] Its not clear what you are referring to. Maybe the line '(he) plays by sense of smell?" I don't think that refers to any kind of aroma a pinball machine has, more like a reference to Tommy's lacking other senses. i.e. if you are deaf, dumb, and blind, you have only taste, touch, and smell as senses left.

The Who – Pinball Wizard Lyrics 1 month ago
@[orboknown:50405] autistic doesnt mean 'deaf dumb and blind', tho. The idea was that Tommy sort of 'willed' his basic senses to shut down in the aftermath of seeing the violent altercation described in the 1921 track. He regains his senses later on, and becomes a self-styled 'guru'.

@[WorkingClassLoser:50404] You are forgetting the context of Elton's 'cover', tho. He played the Pinball Wizard in the movie version. I think it's perfectly fine as a cover, if not much different than the original. The cover of "Lucy in the Sky" seems less clear in terms of why he did it, but he did became friends with John Lennon. They even collaborated together, on "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night".

@[Mickyfinn:50402] I just now googled it, and the original word is Old English, and means 'wise'. The song may have helped the term be commonly used nowadays, but the term itself dates back way before "Tommy", apparently.

@[PlutonianDoll:50401] BBE is part of the Lifehouse project, and was meant to be sung by a specific character within the project, much like certain songs in "Tommy" are sung by characters (I.e "The Acid Queen"). It's my understanding that BBE is meant to be sung from the perspective of a 'villain' of some sort. Of course, that doesn't mean that it's not autobiographical on Pete's part.

The Turtles – Elenore Lyrics 1 month ago
@[modestmaus:50400] It's essentially self-parody, a cynical rewrite of "Happy Together". The band assumed that their label would reject it, but they didn't. The result was a hit single that the band themselves didn't expect.

John Lennon – #9 Dream Lyrics 1 month ago
@[LimeGreenSez:50399] You are pretty spot on, here. You may want to read "The Lennon Prophecy", by Joseph Niezgoda, for a more pointed take. The whole book is about how John's death was foretold in this song, and in other ways. Just keep in mind that the book itself is unsettling in it's subject matter, it's not a 'light, easy read' by any means.
