Love is all - a man whose life is destroyed by drinking "Well, I walk upon the river like it's easier than land" - The river is a metaphor for alcohol. It’s easier to function with alcohol. But he is rising above it. The song is about arriving in a sober moment, and the stillness that comes with it. "Evil's in my pocket and your will is in my hand" - His cigarettes/ flask are in his pocket. He sees them as the evil in his life. Right now he is sober, but he always carries them with him (whether literally or figuratively). "Oh, your will is in my hand" - He’s thinking about someone important to him, like a deceased parent - “your will is in my hands today, dad.” He won't reach into that pocket today. Doing it for someone else makes the impossible seem possible. "And I'll throw it in the current that I stand upon so still" Dump the flask into the endless river of alcohol and stand above it. He’s finally above it. Things slow down to a complete pause as he has this, his most sober moment. This mighty river will be ever present in his life. He will always have to stand above it and be stoic. "Love is all, from what I've heard, but my heart's learned to kill" Love is the most important human experience. He’s been broken hearted and he’s learned to drink to numb the pain. Now he breaks the hearts of others and feels nothing. "Oh, I said I could rise From the harness of our goals Here come the tears But like always, I let them go" - He's lost the person he considers to be his true love. He’s realizing it’s because of the drinking. Lately he’s been crying 20 years of repressed tears he used to drink away. "Just let them go" "Like a house made from spider webs and the clouds rolling in" - He feels his defenses are weak and he doesn't know how to cope. The clouds are rolling in; here come the terrible feelings as the sunlight turns to dark. "You bet this mighty river's both my savior and my sin Oh, my savior and my sin" - The only way out is drinking. It saves him in the moment, but it eventually destroys him. |
