Coldplay – All Your Friends Lyrics 11 months ago
It's very clearly about World War I.

All your friends are your fellow soldiers.
As a soldier, you're told which side you have to fight on. You're forced to obey orders. You have no choice.

The ride into the sunset part is referring to the mass of people dying as they come over the trenches and get torn down by the enemy. It's doubled down on by the "into the fire" line. They're all getting slaughtered.

The 10 below, call come on the radio verse is the general giving orders. You're freezing in your trench. Over you go to face the enemy. Red the rivers flow is obviously pools of blood.

Poppies grow is a direct reference to "In Flanders Fields" - a poem about the red poppies that grew on the fields following the battles. It's the symbol for soldiers who have fallen in combat.

Coldplay – A Sky Full of Stars Lyrics 11 months ago
Adding onto what someone else said here, it didn't occur to me until just now, that he's talking to the audience here. You the audience are the "sky full of stars". It makes sense.

If you've ever been to one of their live concerts, they have light up bracelets they give you. That way, the band can see you in the dark. You're right, they don't care about the criticism they're going to face, because they know they have fans, and always will.

I feel like Coldplay got (still gets) a lot of shit for being too soft and wussy, and they're aware of it. Maybe this song is their way of saying oh well, they're doing what they love and their fans will be on the ride with them regardless. It's a thank you to the fans.

I don't care if you tear me apart for my music, I'm still going to make it.

Coldplay – Midnight Lyrics 11 months ago
Think of where this track is placed in the album order. It's the final stage of the breakup. It's the dividing line before things get more hopeful. Or do they?

Think about it. The first track is him unable to move on from the break up.
The second track is him holding on to the possibility that they will get back together.
The third track is him starting to become desperate.
True Love, he's basically saying I don't care if you're lying, just please tell me you love me.

Midnight serves as the turning point in the story.

We've all heard the saying about things being darkest before the dawn. That's literally the meaning of this song. Leave a light on is that spark of hope. That candle in the window.

Think about what comes after this - Another's Arms. I'm with someone else, but I still wish it was you. Coldplay knew what they were doing with the track order. The entire album is a heartbreaking story.

Coldplay – Always in My Head Lyrics 11 months ago
The entire album was happening as Chris was breaking up with Gwyneth Paltrow, and he even admits that it influenced the recording. Chances are the pain was still incredibly raw with Chris and he's saying that she is obviously always in his thoughts. If you've ever been through a painful breakup, you know it takes a lot of time to get over it. You still wonder what the other person is doing, and how they're dealing with things too. This song doesn't require very much digging, the meaning is very much on the surface.

@[darlomunday:47085] I can't help but have feelings during that guitar solo. It's something else.

Similar themes to the rest of this album, but especially Undertow. Mortality and living the best life might just be the themes of this entire album.

Genesis – Undertow Lyrics 1 year ago
Such a beautiful Genesis song. I would argue it's in the top 10, and reminds me of something from their earlier output, like Firth Of Fifth, except not as long and out there.

My interpretation is a bit wordy, sorry.

The subject is reflecting on their mortality. They realize there are people out there who have had it much worse than they have. If this is Phil talking about himself, he realizes he has made a ton of money, but that in the end he will die just like the poor people. He tells the listener that whatever life has given you, you need to make the best of it, because we all have a limited time on this planet. No matter what we do, that final curtain is drawn and inevitable. I still have all of these riches, but for what.

The man has a long life (days turn into years), but he knows the older he gets that final moment is still coming.

Even then, he says f**k it, I'm still alive gosh darnit. I still have life left and I'm going to take advantage of that. Simple.

"Stand up to the blow that fate has struck upon you, make the most of all you still have coming to you."

Even the title is appropriate. We all get taken out by the undertow, er undertaker.
