The Beatles – Fixing a Hole Lyrics 7 months ago
@[fatcatfreak:48666] I think you're very close. Although Paul has admitted that it's literally about the fans who lingered around his home, and despite the well-established influence of drugs (it's Sgt. Pepper's, after all), I agree with your more philosophical interpretation. However, I would shift the focus from the people in the song to the metaphors of self-meditation: fixing a hole, painting the walls; i.e., repairing the damages to the mind, whether that's done through drugs, meditation, or simply taking some time for yourself. Overall, it's about self-care; so far ahead of its time.

The Beatles – Strawberry Fields Forever Lyrics 9 months ago
On the surface it's about wandering into a sacred place you've been before, most likely the mind, through means of psychedelics, meditation, or whatever. I've been there just by feeling the warmth of sunlight on my skin. I love the way this song is written. It's like the narrator is stumbling over his words, not sure exactly what he means to say; and yet it all flows together poetically. A monumental song.

B.J. Thomas – Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head Lyrics 11 months ago
"So I just did me some talking to the sun
And I said I didn't like the way he got things done
Sleeping on the job"

Of all the lyrics I've heard these are some of my favourite. Charming, whimsical.

Dream Theater – Panic Attack Lyrics 1 year ago
For me personally this is about more than the single occurrence of a panic attack. These lyrics describe my daily life eerily well. I wonder if Petrucci has anxiety, this isn't stuff you can write from study or observation. Also it's complex* not conflicts, and reeling* not feeling.

Pink Floyd – High Hopes Lyrics 1 year ago
This is a beautifully sad song, and as a child of the 21st-century it makes me think about the destruction that capitalism has wrought on the planet and its inhabitants. I spend a lot of time thinking about what life was like before smart phones, the Internet, and instant global communication. Before worldwide news was so easily accessible. What was it like to grow up in a place where you had no clue about what went on beyond the horizon? Maybe you didn't even own a TV or a radio, or if you did, you probably weren't consumed by a constant stream of information at every waking moment. The simple things in life were better. The grass was greener, the taste was sweeter. Very painful lyrics because they touch some deep longing I have for bygone times when life wasn't necessarily better, easier, and certainly not equal, but it was simpler. Just simpler. There must have been so much less to think about, worry about. Much more than childhood nostalgia, this song to me is about nostalgia for a time in humanity that I missed out on. There is something about the Gilmour-era, especially High Hopes, that sounds incredibly ancient, vast, cosmic, and universal. There is no doubt that Gilmour (along with Wright) gave Floyd the space-rock sound they are known for, but his songwriting here exemplifies his difference from Waters, more concerned with abstract, existential ideas and philosophies. That is where I'm at now, and this era of Floyd is really resonating lately. Anyways, beautiful song.
