Death Cab for Cutie – Marching Bands of Manhattan Lyrics 1 year ago
I agree with the most rated answer on here. That this song is definitely about the narrator caring and worrying about his friend who has depression.

I don’t believe he is talking about a friend here. I think he is talking about a significant other who he met (possibly in NYC, DCFC refers NYC a lot for some reason) and she is not in a state of dating anybody or being with anyone. Maybe she just ended a relationship or it was ended for her…whatever. She is hurt and depressed and she is from NYC. Hence why he has all those NYC references in the first verse. You’d only understand that if you actually have been living or visiting the city for a period of time.

The narrator is trying to convince her that not all is lost! There is a beautiful world out there! Even if she wasn’t aware of it then…she could be now. She as a person matters to him a lot and he is trying to convince her that she is bigger than whatever her demise is or whatever caused her depression!

“It is true what they say, that I live like a hermit in my own head!” Basically he is saying, that hey, he gets depressed too and he gives off that kinda vibe however “when the sun shines again, I’ll open the blinds and let the light in” he is open to life when things go his way or make him happy compared to his love interest who is just depressed regardless of the situations.

The last verse I interpret as the narrator has done so many things to try and help this person, significant other or not by glorify them and making them aware of the world around them! However he has given up and basically saying , all right I’ve done everything I could but you continue on…so at the end of the day he is done with her and he basically gives her a reality check.

“While you debate half empty or half full your love is gonna drown”

So while she is trying to decide whether to be with the narrator or not at the end of the day her love for him is drowned
