@[jonpalin:38891] I think you're right to say the song vascillates between two attitudes. It's not meant as serious criticism of what went on However, i do think when he says" i shall fight... I shall die" it is meant to be ironic. People had no choice whether they went and fought. It isn't " i will fight, i would die if i had to". You have no choice and will probably die. I'm not sure if i can see the positive side of dying really. How can people be free if they have no choice? |

I think the lines, But did you know that when it snows My eyes become large and The light that you shine can't be seen. Are the key to understanding the song. If it can be understood by anyone other than Seal. Pupils dilate for two reasons: 1) in the dark to capture more light so we can see better, 2) when we take drugs. When it snows your pupils should contract because of the reflective ness if the snow. Otherwise you are blinded. His pupils dilate in the snow and he cannot see her true light. The real her. Real love. I'll be honest I'm struggling to find an exact meaning. The grey, the sea, the snow are all images of loneliness, cold, emptiness. The singer's life. He meets the rose, he falls in love but it is obsession. He uses her as a drug to escape his own problems. Snow could refer to troubles or times of personal crisis fir him. A time of opportunity for his love to see the other person for who they really are. But he is blinded by his own obsession. The high not the pill. Real love can heal. But he asks is this healthy? Snow is beautiful but also cold and deadly. Loving and caring for someone vs. loving the feelings given by your obsession. Maybe maybe not. |

@[Mojave66:37885] I think I agree with you: it seems to be about the moment someone new steps into your life. There is a sense of other things or people fading into insignificance as you are carried away by your feelings for someone, perhaps. But Avalon is fantasy ultimately, i suppose. There are 3 "out of nowhere". I don't really understand the last one. Has the meaning changed here? Is it a positive experience or an emotionally dangerous one? I'm not sure. |
