Alice in Chains – Put You Down Lyrics
|
This was written by Jerry Cantrell. I think it has a double meaning.
First verse - Heartbreaker. Probably referring to a girl
Second verse - Hard drinker. Referring to alcohol, and possibly other drugs, not heroin though
Cantrell personifies the alcohol just like the girl, saying to both that he can't "put you down". This also points to the similarity between addictions. Love is an addiction too, after all. |

Screaming Trees – Crawl Space Lyrics

I suppose this song is kind of like Jerry Cantrell's "Solitude" - about the human tendency towards isolation.
And how Lanegan viewed it as "too much to take" to leave isolation, while also recognizing the damage from his secluded lifestyle. |

@[judexyz:41886] Gary Lee Conner wrote most of it before Kurt\'s death, then Mark Lanegan wrote many of the lyrics after his death. Pretty interesting creation story. |

Gary Lee Conner said he wrote this song about Mark Lanegan in the late 90\'s.\nRIP to an irreplaceable vocalist.\nThank you Mark Lanegan, Gary Lee Conner, Van Conner, Barrett Martin, and Mark Pickerel for the great music, your music will outlast all. |

@[Starwatcher23:41044] I like how people just casually return to songmeanings after no activity for multiple years... a testament to the site\'s longevity!\r\nI think you are correct. And agreed, I will be thinking about this loss for a long time. |

Soundgarden – Overfloater Lyrics

I\'m going to disagree with everyone here. Cornell described this song as "self-affirming". I don\'t think that involves drugs, and can see this song making sense without meaning drugs. Rather, I believe Cornell is describing a state of mind where a person feels they are unique and distinguished from all others, represented by the word "overfloating". The person knows nothing can ever be right and so they can only cope through seemingly baseless self-affirmation.. alone.\n\nCornell was off of drug for over a decade before he wrote this song, so clearly that mindset wasn\'t needed to write this, and I think many non-addicts have felt this way before (including me). |

@[thrashgrunge4life:38821] This was written before his death. I normally would never say a song takes on new meaning after a person's death. However, I will make an exception for this one.. that last line hits differently after his death for sure, and I think Jerry would agree. |

Soundgarden – Circle of Power Lyrics

This song's lyrics are a lot simpler than they look.
It's about how every government / ruling party is restrictive and corrupt in some way, and how new leadership might be labeled as different (under different names), but always maintains strict control over its people. |

@[fatpom:37879] Very few of the AIC lyrics written by Jerry were about drugs actually, just Killer Is Me and maybe Down in a Hole. We Die Young is partially about drugs as well but only about kids selling it, not his addictions. He wrote a lot about drugs in his solo albums though. I don't think this one is about drugs, however, it seems to be more related to self-affirmation |
