I go with the idea that the woman is stuck and that nothing will change. She lies her way from one dead end to another. She is committed to being unfaithful. It's her strength and her weakness. A real, committed relationship is just too much work. When her older husband dies, she'll take his money and look for another target and have lovers on the side until her looks are gone.

@[psyche:36282] EXACTLY RIGHT! She pours herself a tall one and lies to herself. Can't be faithful to her husband or her lover or her own lying self. The song is a work of genius. Tragedy.

I think of Patty as a kind of Hemingway of song writers, packing a lot of meaning, action and power into a few words. Thanks to everyone for sharing their insights. Made me cry. Then again, Patty's songs do that quite consistently.

I agree with much of what is written here, except that I think some are missing the nobility of work. Without a useful task to do, the main character might just fall apart. This is true of both typing and making pies. She is choosing to not cry or die. " I'm making pies " This is the prototypical stiff upper lip attitude of many of our elderly family who do not make being a victim their identity. I feel admiration for that toughness. "It's not far. I can walk" Good for her! Love this song and all it means.
