This happened to me, sort of—and in Morocco, too. Nearly 30 years ago. But in a bar, not a market. I no longer had a ticket, having already decided to stay on. We later traveled together. After a few years, I finally left her permanently at an airport in Europe. C'est la vie. |

The song has an air of sadness to it. A summer affair, soon to be over as the sailor must soon depart. As short as it is, the genius of the lyrics is that it makes one care and want to know what happened to these people later in their lives. One hopes they will find happiness, but it doesn't seem likely. |

The lyrics refer to the kindness, tranquility, and love that female beings are uniquely capable of bestowing in relation to male beings. The song is not looking back on a specific relationship, but a lifetime of relationships, life being a mysterious journey in which we travel through places we never even imagined at the beginning. |

@[T_D_Phoenix:39779] - Exactly. The song is from 1971, the beginning of the Nixon Drug War, and is set in the future. The friend has been on the lam for many years, and the singer accidentally encounters him during a trip the singer has taken to somewhere far from their former mutual home. The Sandman is a fanatical vice cop with an evil reputation in their hometown, who has a reputation for embellishing charges by lying and other nefarious cop tactics, and is chasing the friend for some innocuous "crime" like sharing a magic mushroom with a friend (maybe the singer) long ago. |

I thought this song was by Weird Al Yankovic. I picture someone driving and someone is tailgating him, so he's muttering to himself, "Don't follow me, don't follow me, I've got my Sprite, I've got my Orange Crush" (to toss out the window at you). I think that would actually be a better song. REM's lyrics never make any sense, and their music is pretty unvaried and boring. |
