Amy Grant – Ask Me Lyrics 1 year ago
@[thirteencats:43065] Sorry to reply to my own comment, but I just had the thought that this song came from Amy Grant's first secular album. I don't know what she was going through in her life that caused her to release a secular album after being a Christian only artist previously. But maybe that's a sign that this song IS sarcastic (and therefore meaningful), because she's questioning everything enough anyway to release her first secular album. There's probably a lot of confusion in that which shows in the song- how the writer sees both sides that seem to contradict each other.

Regardless, I do like the song.

Amy Grant – Ask Me Lyrics 1 year ago
Unfortunately, this song is about a little girl being sexually abused over the course of years and how it affects her as an adult. I think the song's aim is genuine to say that God is bringing this woman to life again, but the lyrics of the second verse actually say the opposite to me as they contradict themselves.

"Now, she's looking in the mirror
At a lovely woman face
No more frightened little girl
Like she's gone without a trace
Still she leaves the light
Burning in the hall
It's hard to sleep at all"

Obviously, the frightened little girl is still there, because she can't even get any sleep in her own house even with the night light.

"'Til she crawls up in her bed
Acting quiet as a mouse
Deep inside, she's listening
For a creaking in the house
But no one's left to harm her
She's finally safe and sound
There's a peace she's found"

If she's feeling peaceful and as if she's "finally safe and sound," then why is skulking about, tiptoeing around in her own house, acting like she doesn't belong there?

I think this song isn't meant to be sarcastic, even though it kind of seems that way to me. I think this song just suffers from not being well thought out or proven. Kind of like when you were given an essay topic in class to prove one way or the other, but your three page argument failed to prove your point.

Pretty song, and I think the writer's heart was in the right place, but unless it IS meant to be sarcastic, the song is ultimately confusing and meaningless.

The Verve Pipe – The Freshmen Lyrics 1 year ago
@[Googlymoo:42828] I don't know how much I can believe the songwriter after all of that. I actually think the first verse sounds like the murder of a baby girl via asphyxiation rather than abortion with the:

"Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice, no

"Can't be held responsible
"Cause she was touching her face"

People are asking what the touching of her face means, but it's right after "stop a baby's breath." Seems pretty obvious to me that it was about a young mom putting her hand on a baby girl's face and smothering her.

R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics 1 year ago
While I appreciate the higher rated comments on this song, I have to disagree with the basis that this song is about unrequited love, unless it's about unrequited SELF love.

The narrator doesn't care or think enough about himself to actually TELL the object of his external love how he feels. Instead, he's stalking and obsessing over her, looking for the littlest sign that she likes him back, and he's getting some- she's laughing and she's singing- but still- he does nothing because of his fear. How on earth is someone supposed to know how you feel about them if you don't freaking tell them?

I think he knows that all he has to do is to tell her how he feels, but he won't do it. He'd rather blame the object of his affections for somehow not returning affections that he actually never gave her in the first place. Very backward, but human and not an unusual situation.

I'm frustrated with the narrator for not telling this person how he feels about her, expecting the love to be so big that she can just read his mind (his dream), and then turning on her as if she rejected him, when the truth is she had no idea that he loved her.

Tori Amos – Frog On My Toe Lyrics 2 years ago
I always thought the lines of the chorus were:

Slap them boys when they're naughty
Make them crawl, make you HARDY.

Hardy makes a lot more sense than 'haughty,' even though 'haughty' is a perfect rhyme. Most songs aren't written with perfect rhymes and are actually deliberately written to not have perfect rhymes because they're usually cliched and predictable.

Plus, Tori has a thick southern accent when she's singing. It definitely sounds like 'hardy' to me as in both strong in character and ultimately a strong, sexual woman when she's older, because it's in reference to the naughty boys.

REO Speedwagon – Can't Fight This Feeling Lyrics 2 years ago
I have to disagree with most people here. This song isn't about falling in love with your friend and just finding out that you've done so. This is about someone falling in love with someone who you think isn't good enough for you for one reason or another, whether it's the 'girl next door', the 'boring nice guy', or something worse, like a class or race issue. However, you just keep this person around, pretending all along that this person is only your friend instead of something more. It's like you're just keeping this person on the backburner while you go out searching for the person you think is better, more befitting of you. At some point in the song, you realize you're on some shit and that the person you really love is the person you've been pretending not to love all along.

Hall and Oates – Kiss On My List Lyrics 2 years ago
@[MrAwwesome:42184] | I agree.

Also, if he's telling the truth about lying (more on that in a bit), there's the cheekiness that her kiss being on his list sounds like she's just another notch in his belt. He might actually mean that she's just another notch or he wants to pretend to himself that she's just another notch, because he doesn't want to like her as much as he does.

Because he's 'smiling' through most of the song with the sweet chorus, he might actually be lying about lying- if that makes any sense. He talked about listening to friends' advice. It really sounds like he's let his friends get into his head about this girl, so he just wants to devalue her in his own eyes, so that he can seem cool to his friends, but maybe a part of him knows he's lying to himself about not liking the girl and that he actually does like her.

A lot of times, the lie is somewhere in between or the liar will lie about both sides of the issue.

@[MamboMan:36770] I think the musical "jubilation" you hear is what the English call sarcasm. He was deliberately making a big deal out of nothing with the music, because people in life make a big deal out of saying stupid things to strangers like 'good morning' and 'have a nice day,' and for most of those strangers, that kind of talk passes for actually meaningful human interaction.

Sponge – Molly (16 Candles Down the Drain) Lyrics 3 years ago
I always thought this was about a sixteen year old girl who had either committed suicide or she was living a drug and alcohol fueled life such that she was killing her spirit/ soul.

The point of view seems to be from an older (but probably not much older) male who is probably legally too old for her. He's wants to keep his distance for legal reasons- or maybe there's just something else that is also inappropriate about their relationship, but he's attracted to her and so can't help but to play games with her a bit ('I think you're drunk/ I start to laugh'). He doesn't want things to be quite as serious and intense with this girl as they actually are.

The part about her being naked in the bath to me suggests that the girl was just so vulnerable in a moment of drunkenness that she possibly didn't care who saw her naked. More likely, though, she was in love with him ('I found your note... it said I love you') and she knew that he didn't want her because of her age or because she was destroying herself, etc. So letting him see her naked, vulnerable, and drunk like that was her way of giving him all the love she knew how to give him in the moment, even if she knew he might never return it to her. Kind of tragic.

He is disturbed by the fact that no matter what she does to try to destroy herself with the smoking ('nicotine stains on her hands' and getting drunk), he sees her pretty much as a kind of innocent angel ('wilted flowers in a vase'- at least, he'd called her 'flowers' instead of just a 'drunken slu4' or something). He sees her value (that maybe she doesn't see), and he's tormented that she's destroying herself.

The real clincher line to me in the song is 'I wish I loved you.' The thing is- it's obvious that he DOES love her, just either not in the romantic way that she wants him to or just that he's conflicted because he very much romantically loves someone younger than society feels is appropriate... he loves her but feels it's not in her best interest to tell her, because he loves her so much that he wants her to be free to grow and evolve for at least a few years without him... even if it means he loses her in the process.

Such a sad and beautiful song. If there's a real girl behind this song, I hope she's okay.

The Bangles – Eternal Flame Lyrics 3 years ago
To me it makes me think of when two people who are meant for each other dream of each other for years before they ever meet. The singer does question 'am I only dreaming' after they know each other and says 'I watch you when you are sleeping' which- from experience- is something you can do in the astral with such a dream partner.

I say that it seems to me this is more about a dream partner finally coming real into waking life- rather than a longterm relationship, because the singer mentions 'a whole life so lonely/ and then come and ease the pain' meaning that there was almost the span of their whole lives to that point wherein they were not actually with each other, but they still felt close through the sun and the rain.

And now that they are together in the waking dimension- she mentions inadvertently that their eyes are open by saying 'close your eyes,' and she wants him to feel the physical beating of her heart and to feel her hand to know that it's finally real and physical. She wants him to close his eyes to see if he remembers her from his dreams as she asks him 'do you understand?/ do you feel the same?'

The myth is that people who belong together in this way and who dream of each other are 'twinflames' or eternal flames.

I don't speak Spanish, so I threw the Spanish verse through google Translate and got this:

'I'm always dreaming of you
Kissing my lips, caressing my skin
Hugging me with crazy cravings
Imagining you love me
How could I love you'

The last line, 'How could I love you' and the earlier English lines 'And I know it's not right/ But I guess I should try/ To do what I should do' suggest that one of the partners is married/ committed.

Gorgeous and meaningful song. Not sure about the 'take comfort in your friends' line, because most people who commit suicide feel their friends and family are not there for them, and in many cases, they're actually correct. Just because someone is physically present doesn't mean that they are emotionally present in someone else's life, and the fact that they are physically present but emotionally not present can often make it worse. In my case, I don't even have the physical presence of people in my life, but this song reminds me of why that might be and to still have compassion for everyone I have known.

@[thirteencats:34860] I didn't mean to refer to Sting and archetype as though he wrote the song. I know that Andy wrote it. It's just that maybe these were ideas that were discussed between the three of them, being that it was obvious that Sting was into archetypes.

The Police – Omegaman Lyrics 3 years ago
The Omegaman, to me, seems to be the projected 'end all be all' image of what a man is supposed to be in this world. This image could be an archetypal image that all men share (as Sting was into Carl Jung and his archetypes) or it could be the image that each man holds for himself that describes his own version of perfection in himself as a man. If the man has a particular place or status in society- such as a famous man or a titled man, etc., this version of the perfect man probably holds lots of projections from other people about who the perfect version of this man actually should be. It's possible that the man holding onto this ideal image in his head doesn't even know that many of the ideals wrapped up in his image aren't even his or he is incapable of separating his own ideals from everyone else's ideals about who he should be.

In this vein, it seems that the 'city screams' and 'television sets' are referring to the insomnia that another poster mentioned (brought on by the anxiety to be this perfect image), as well as the horrors of the world (both external and internal) and the fakeness of superficial appearances (and the struggle of a man to achieve something that's fake anyway). The horrors of the world make the man want to be 'manly' and save it, but he soon realizes that he's basically alone in the world just like everyone else ('always talking to myself') and that he can really only save himself despite what everyone has told him that men do (they are typically strong and saviours of the weak). The realization that he can't be what he's been told he should be and what he believes he should be makes him a bit crazy and desperate. I think you can hear this in Sting's scream that leads into Andy's impassioned guitar solo.

The wordless solo is like a person's journey into his feelings (whether he wants to take the journey or not). At first, this journey is wordless, you can't describe your feelings in words, you can just feel them, and they can make you a bit crazy in the head- the head that is supposed to be supplying you with words to put to your experience. The fact that the man is finally allowing himself to feel his feelings, too, is important, because men are usually taught from a young age that feelings aren't important nor is the expression of them manly.

After he finally lets himself feel some of the pent up feelings in the solo, though, he seems a bit calmer in the next verse and more willing to let the world fade away so that he can finally start seeing his own ideals no longer enmeshed with everyone else's. I think the 'reaching for a perfect life' in this verse isn't actually about reaching this old image of perfection that he's always held, rather, I think it's about realizing that perfection is unattainable and that he's actually wanting to find a balance in a kind of 'perfect imperfection.'

It seems that the man knows that all of the straining of reaching to be this version of perfection in a man is killing him (the repetition of 'I'm so tired' at the end). And it's not spoken, but Omegaman- well, you usually hear 'Alpha and Omega' talked about at the same time- 'the beginning and the end.' In that respect, it makes me wonder if the man has gone back to the lines in the first verse of 'I sit upon the edge now/ should I make that leap?' Meaning, perhaps, he's sitting on the edge of everything he's always been told and he's always believed, and he's wondering if he should 'make that leap' into something that might not be what was expected of him (or what he expected of himself) but that might actually make him happy.

Another poster (Amberjack) mentioned that this first verse made him/her think of a comic book character about to leap into action to save something. I think at first, the man is believing he should save the world, but in what, to me, feels like an unspoken return to this first verse, I'm thinking he's realized he can only save himself, so he wants to pull his real self from the muck of the 'city screams' and the fakeness of everything both internal and external.

Woke with this song in my head, so I looked up the lyrics. I find myself irritated that the male point of view initially states in the first verse that it's the women who is looking to get back what they had before, not the man... and yet, in the rest of the song, he seems to be blaming her for why they can't be together again and moaning 'please surrender' and trying to get her to remember everything about their summer fling. Either this song has nonsensical lyrics or the woman gave up bashing her head against the wall, trying to rekindle their summer love all by herself in the reality of the rest of the year and now the man regrets it and is left to do the same by himself after she's moved on.

I like most of the highly rated interpretations for this song, especially SultanofSix's interpretation. All I'll add to that is that I don't think this song is about a teenage boy. It's about a fully grown man who has become so vulnerable because of his love for the woman that he's been returned from the often hellish horrors that are most adult relationships to something sweet and innocent again that he can trust. He feels so safe with this woman that he can essentially be a 'boy' again with her. It's one of the highest compliments I think a man can give a woman. I love this tender and very sensual song.

Anyone can see anything in a song that they want to see, and that's fine. Just because I see nothing sexual in this song doesn't mean that other people who obviously see only sex in this song are wrong. However, all I see in this song has to do with the law of attraction, personal magick, and the power of intention that goes into all of that.

@[thirteencats:34165] I'm responding to my own interpretation, because I'm new here and can't figure out how to edit my original comment. The line 'I touched your hand before the crowd started rushing in' also seems to be a dig at the woman as though to remind her that HE touched her hand before anyone else did. He's trying to remind her of when the tables had previously been turned that had him as the powerful one and the woman as the groupie wanting him.

Survivor – High On You Lyrics 4 years ago
There do seem to be two perspectives in this song that make it confusing. However, I'm not sure he's actually talking to two different people: the woman- the object of his desires and maybe a friend with whom he discusses women. One possibility is that all of the lyrics are directed only at the woman, but that his perspective in life changes. I know it's strange, but leap with me for a moment.

In the beginning of the song, he knows that he's a famous singer of a well-known band. The woman seems to be a groupie that he may or may not have slept with (I suspect that he has), but that he doesn't really see as any great gift ('I let the wheel of fortune spin' = I didn't go after you in any meaningful way when I had the chance, because I was just running through my luck and my women as a famous rockstar), because he can get a woman any time he wants. He keeps rubbing this idea that he can get anyone anytime into the head of the groupie- probably while he's with her and then later...

The line 'I touched your hand before the crowd started rushing in' seems to have two meanings- 1) that he selected her as the groupie from the crowd- but then, later- the crowd started rushing in but not for him- for HER- as though she later developed some kind of fame on her own that left him out in the cold.

The rest of the lyrics seem to indicate that the life perspective of the singer has changed and that now he knows what it's like to be a groupie to a famous person that you can't really have. There are still all of these little digs at the object of his desire, though, because he still has a massive ego and wants to remind her that he can still get anyone anytime he wants... but obviously not... he can't seem to get back the woman he realized he wanted when it was possibly too late.

Also, 'high on you' seems to have a couple meanings- 1) the poetic meaning of just feeling the euphoria and craziness of being in love with someone and 2) maybe the idea that he's literally doing drugs to try to get that feeling again that he had when he was briefly with her, because the other women that he can easily get just aren't doing it for him anymore.
