@[scarlet115:32419] Okay so just to clear things up and be more organized I want to give you a visual. Picture a door and right on the other side of it is a spiral staircase. The song Mr Self Destruct is The Character opening the door and stepping into the room towards the spiral staircase, and the song Piggy is the first step down the staircase. All of the other songs (with the exceptions of Earaser and Hurt are ‘steps’ down the staircase, and many of them The Character is against Mr Self Destruct but he is too strong now and has gone into a Downward Spiral). And at the very end there is one more door and The Character doesn’t have a choice but to open it; this door is Hurt. And this track is mostly on interperetation, perspective, and assumption. |

To understand this song you first have to listen to this track before in The Downward Spiral. In Mr Self Destruct the narrator is Mr Self Destruct, and he is telling The Character the album is based off of (maybe Trent) what is and what he does and that The Character will let him do this because he will always be there; inside his head. So knowing that The Character is trying to live with Mr Self Destruct controlling him and talking to him (metaphorically of course, it’s really The Character hating himself), The Character is in love with someone when he is introduced to Mr Self Destruct or falls in love after. So knowing that The Character is mentally weakened by Mr Self Destruct and is not getting any better he falls in love with someone, and really falls because he needs help (hey pig there’s a lot of things I hoped you could help me understand) because of Mr Self Destruct/his wounds. Then the person he falls in love with leaves and this hurts him so much more because he now is trapped alone with Mr Self Destruct, and they left him for ‘something new’ making The Character feel as though he is not enough or worth enough for someone to love him back, AND he left apart of himself with the person he loved feeling empty and alone and hurting. He then comes to realize (or Mr Self Destruct told him) that the reason he feels this way is because the person he loves(or loved) left him; so he begins to hate and blame them for Mr Self Destruct’s work (the hate and blame is Mr Self Destruct’s work). And the song is the introduction for the hate and blame pointed to his (past) love, but one has to listen to the entirety of it to understand what happens in the past. Also, the chorus (nothing can stop me now, because I don’t care anymore) means that nothing is in Mr Self Destruct’s way (or The Character's, or probably both) and can do anything to hurt himself more, because he has given up on love, hope, worth, etc, but love seemed to be the only thing he had left, and the order of the songs makes perfect sense because Mr Self Destruct was the introduction, the cause to The Downward Spiral, the beginning. And then piggy is last bit of reality, hope, and love left taken away for something The Character can never measure up to leaving him ‘black and blue and broken bones, you left me here, I’m all alone’, starting the first real step to The Downward Spiral (Mr Self Destruct was inside of himself, it was internal, but piggy was both). And ‘What am I supposed to do? I lost my shit because of you’ infers that he doesn’t know what to do now because his love was his only meaning of existence for a while and he was already almost going to break before he found his love but now The Character’s a goner; it was the last straw. Also, (almost forgotten) ‘Nothings turning out the way I planned’ means that he didn’t expect his lover to suddenly leave him for ‘something new’. This song is like a second beginning to the album: The Introduction’s Sequel. :) |
