Paedophelia? I know, this is probably way off and the song is as most analysts here are convinced of about a relationship between adults... but hear me out. Take a look at the video where they re dressed in classic greek style clothes. While singing the singer clearly adresses a cute kid who even has kind of sexy clothes on (the kids tushy is less coved than it could be). There is the apple she hands the singer, symbolising the original sin. Like the apple eve gave to adam. He rejects the offer though. He wants to stay "innocent", untainted. The woman at the table could represent the mother (and singers wife?) who refuses to understand whats going on She laughes at the girl while he is yelling at the kid. (In fact mothers often refuse to see when their child is molested. If the daughter tries to ask for help they're like "stop lying".) The mother does not to be helpful for the sinner - aeh singer. While she wants to please him, he pushes her away. At the end he will let her please him though. She is allowed to push him on the swing. The man with whom the kid enters the dionysus-esk sinfilld area has a bat in his hand. He represents justice and punishment. When the singer finally waves the kid away the constantly angry looking man leaves for good. The singer was able to avoid punishment (the club) by not giving in to the TAINTED LOVE. |

This is about someone who is sad about the fact that his father - and him too - are not able to fulfill their dreams. Both seem to be trapped in a world that uses their workforce. A world they cant escape. The "bottle" migth be the reason, why his father cant escape the "cage" of the ship (his life, with his responsibilities - but without fulfillment). When the bottle "is broken" the ship he worked on for so long disembraks without him. His labour for nothing. At least not for something in the long turn. Thats why Billy cries for his father. He sees, that there is no escape for them (or at least for his father). They will always build stuff (futures) for other people. But they will fail themselves. When the father dies, it is an early end for him. The reaction of the world showes, that they care (a "cheque and a watch" is more than nothing). But of course that is not, what the father and Billy dreamed of. But they dont know, what they re dreaming of. A better life of some sort, sure. But Billy is only looking forward to this "island of souls" where he will meet his father again. I think, its Billys idea of heaven. Billy will work his life down like his father did. Because he does not know any better. And cant imagine. Its sad. But I can understand now. Go and figure out your dreams. Go and try to make them true. Or be Billy. |
