Nirvana – All Apologies Lyrics 4 years ago
What else should I be
All apologies

--This line says that he is what he is and that he knows that people don't like it, and so he apologizes for it.

What else could I say
Everyone is gay

--He could mean this literally: everyone has homoerotic feelings. Or he could mean that everyone is "happy", or even "lame". He once said that he once thought that he was gay, so this could also be projecting unresolved feelings about himself to everyone else. He said he would be bi-sexual (wiki) if it was not for Courtney Love, so he probably was at least bi-sexual.

What else could I write
I don't have the right

--He feels constrained in his musical expression. Record labels or retailers probably made him feel this way.

In the sun I feel as one

--This could be literal. With light rays from the sun toughing him, he feels connected to everything. Not sure what else he could mean.

Married
Buried

-- People try to look too deep into this line. He was in a shitty relationship defined by disloyalty and that probably made him feel emasculated and worthless. In contrast to what other people have said on this page, he WAS married to Courtney Love when he wrote this song, and he even his daughter was already born.

I wish I was like you
Easily amused

--self explanatory. he means what he says here.

Find my nest of salt

--this line can't be understood with any degree of accuracy.

Everything's my fault
I take all the blame

--He seems to be very literal here. He does not want to blame anyone for anything that bothers him. He takes all the blame for it.

Aqua seafoam shame

----this line can't be understood with any degree of accuracy.

Sunburn, freezer burn

--this could be a reference to oneness. How when you try to seperate things with great distances as evidence that they are separate entities, then the two ends loop around and the furthest distance actually end up approaching the very same point. E.g. the sun is hot as hell, and it burns. Also, something frozen that is cold enough somehow burns too. So in both ends of the spectrum, life will end up hurting you.

Choking on the ashes of her enemy

----this line can't be understood with any degree of accuracy. This could mean that he is hooked on heroin. Chocking on it. Dying from it. And it is the enemy of Love, "her". I don't want to resort to drugs and Love, but they were an undeniably impactful force in his life. I could not say that I know what this means with any confidence, though.

All in all is all we are

--this one is obvious to people of eastern though. someone of western thought would say that his means absolutely nothing. Assuming that we are at one with the entire universe, we are necessarily at one with one another. "At one" means that just as I only exist in your mind, it is also true that your entire existence is only a product of my mind. This is a complete denial of the materialistic view of life. Things are not made of clumps of matter floating in spacetime, things are more like ideas in one undivided stream of consciousness.

@[jv90:30756] one more reply, from jv90. I did some quick research and found this on wiki:

"Cobain dedicated "All Apologies" to his wife, Courtney Love, and their daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, during the band's appearance at the Reading Festival in Reading, England on August 30, 1992. "I like to think the song is for them," he told Michael Azerrad in the 1993 biography, Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana, "but the words don't really fit in relation to us...the feeling does, but not the lyrics." Cobain summarized the song's mood as "peaceful, happy, comfort – just happy happiness.""

Hence, he was married when he wrote this song. Therefore, the line "married. burried." is about being in a bad marriage.

@[jv90:30755] i wrote this, but read a comment below about how he wrote this song before he was with Courtney Love. so the obvious meaning is not correct if this is true. Seems like he is saying some commitment he had was toxic. Who fucking knows.

@[mostly90s:30754] some decent interpretations. too confident overall. one can't be too confident when interpreting poetry, especially from someone like Kurt. lots of his stuff could intentionally have multiple meanings, while some could intentionally have no meaning at all (except maybe to mess with people who think everything has to have meaning).

He is definitely sad. I definitely think "Married, Buried" is pretty obvious. He was in a fucking shitty relationship with a disloyal whore by many accounts. The line "everyone is gay" can have at least 3 meanings, as was pointed out above: it can mean

1) everyone has homoerotic feelings
2) everyone is lame
3) everyone is happy (except him)

No one can ever know what he meant. Nor what the line "aqua sea foam shame means". However, he definitely DOES say "all IN ALL is all we are. This might sound foreign to a western world, but I'm pretty sure he is just saying that Oneness is the reality of the universe, and we are necessarily one another (literally). Brahman. Tao. Oneness. He is saying "the particle interpretation of the universe that the west promotes acting as if everything is distinct objects is false". What is true is that all things are the same thing. Physics is necessary to get much more precise (e.g. what is real is the electromagnetic field-- not the electron).
