I don't believe anything an artist says about the meaning of their song. If every musician in the world was telling the truth about the song meaning, ALL THE SONGS IN THE WORLD WOULD BE ABOUT A GIRL; a girl leaving him, a girl loving him(or her, it's the 21st Century after all) a girl, AGGHHHGG.!! Artists mislead you on purpose. They don't want to be confined to one universal meaning. Music is interpretational. You're supposed to come up with your own meaning. A profession as full of creativity as music wouldn't be restrictive and limited to one WORLD meaning. Don't believe a damn thing they say, the artists.
