Natalie Merchant – Giving Up Everything Lyrics 3 years ago
A very deep and beautiful song. What I get out of this song is perhaps giving up earthly attachments. Relinquishing control and expectations and therefore finding inner peace and beauty through the empty spaces in your life. When I say "empty", I don't mean in the traditional sense, but instead how Buddhists define it. That kind of emptiness is liberating. Everything is relative.

Duran Duran – The Seventh Stranger Lyrics 3 years ago
If there were such thing as the "perfect song", this would be it. The message I take from this beautiful song is the process a person goes through when they lose either something or someone they've trusted. Maybe they even lost a part of themselves.

..."Echos growing in the heart of twilight
They lay back laughing at naivety's star"

He's seen something that has reminded him of the object of his trust. (For the sake of argument, let's call it a letter he just read... it doesn't matter, could be anything).

"Those words are all remainders
Echos growing in the heart of twilight
They lay back laughing at naivety's star"

The trust for this person is gone. Removed from his life. Now the reminder is just echos of something that used to be. He trusted, he got burned, and hind-sight is 20/20. He's realising how naive he was.

"The dusty shadow of a passing favour".
Perhaps he did a favor for someone and then taken advantage of, but it doesn't matter anymore what he did. He didn't see it coming.

Chorus:
Whatever happened, deeply hurt him. He's been crushed by the deceit he's just discovered, and through his tears, he sees this person for who they really are. He thought he knew them well, but they may as well just been a stranger.

"Can't tell the real from reflection..."
He can't trust anybody now. He's lost where ever he goes.

"Some say the seventh sounds a little bit stranger"
I don't know how to interpret this line. Maybe he's learning how to see through someone's lies more easily.

"A year of Sundays seems to have drifted..."
Eventually, he's gained perspective and wisdom from the ordeal - a lot of it.

"...I'm not seized in desperation....no steel reproaches on the....but I still can feel those splinters of ice, as I look through the eyes of a stranger"
He's not going to let this ordeal permanently crush him. But he's also never going to forget how badly he was hurt. He is still able to trust, but he'll give his trust more wisely, in the future. If he feels he's being deceived again, he'll walk away.

Something we've all been through many times through the course of our lives, and Simon brings the emotions alive with such beautiful poetry.

My Lord, you're all wrong and way too pedestrian. Alison Goldfrapp was taking a piss in that interview and ya'll fell for it. Bless her heart. The song is about her vibrator. Don't believe me? Well then, try it.

The Kills – Goodnight Bad Morning Lyrics 5 years ago
This song is about drugs alright, but not for the reasons all the above comments claim.

This song describes getting busted by the police. In her case, sounds like it's her first time. She knew it was coming sooner or later, but it's not the way she imaged.

The speed's working, I see it = yeah, speed tends to really hit another level as soon as you see the cop lights flashing. It's also distracts you, which is probably why they've been caught.

Under light bulb sun = again, anyone who's been busted, knows exactly what this lyric is describing. That annoying light they shine is as bright as the sun and anyone within ten feet, can see who they're shining it on..you! And your eyes feel like they're actually melting into your head.

The jailer in my mind are all dead = the way you imagine how police act in your head is a lot different from reality. They are cunning, and many times they try to trick you into admitting to more wrongdoing than what they discover.

All of our secrets are coming undone = telling the cops jack squat. Secrets undone, as in safe and sound. Or he's implementing himself to make her charges less serious.

What a beautiful state we're in = you look pathetic and feel pathetic too. *Double meaning here...could also mean state trooper car.

Taking speed makes you stay up all night. Sometimes the mornings aren't great. In this case, the morning has been really bad.

The above lyrics are correct, thank you. It's 'want' and 'world'...where this "woman" thing came from, I have no idea.

Safe in the bedroom

Paul McCartney – Another Day Lyrics 6 years ago
Yeah, it's about a woman's mundane life, but there's more to it. She's also an addict.

"dipping in the pocket of her raincoat" = getting money to pay for what the "man of her dreams" (drug dealer) has come to deliver or "break the spell";
"drinks another coffee and she finds it hard to stay awake" = probably on amphetamines or cocaine;
"sometimes she feels so sad" = obvious to anyone who's ever taken amphetamines and felt the crash. (Not a fun feeling).

She's a functioning addict. She keeps a job, and gets done what has to be done, but that's about it. Rather than living a normal life and socializing, she choses to take whatever it is she takes to get through 'another day'.
