Paul Simon – Graceland Lyrics 6 years ago
@[suckmykiss:25544] I think your instinct that it was about South Africa, was not wrong. The song is actually on 2 levels. On one it is about travelling to Graceland, and on the other it is about getting musical inspiration in a completely new context. It is about renewal of roots, 1st American, 2nd African.

Paul Simon – Diamonds On the Soles of Her Shoes Lyrics 6 years ago
@[JForsythe62:25543] I think that there is a lot in what you say and I have thought of it in a similar way, but being South African, I also thought it could have been to do with Paul Simon's relationship to the county of S.A. and how it ha the superficial attractions of "diamonds" but, depending on your skin colour, you could feel very much like a poor boy. More the opposite of what you thought. I agree that there is reconciliation in the end.

Paul Simon – You Can Call Me Al Lyrics 6 years ago
One thing I didn't notice mentioned was the beautiful tin whistle solo. I believe this was played by a South African. It is actually a very iconic sound in Johannesburg, S.A. where it could be heard in the streets in the '50's and '60's, often played by young black children. It is mentioned in the poem "Kwela for Tomorrow", by Rui Knopfli. "In spit of this/An astounding sound soars arabesques in the morning air", which describes this solo precisely.
