Joni Mitchell – Hejira Lyrics 1 year ago
@[TrueThomas:46536] Your description "cerebral road movie" really fits. Joni had clearly escaped into anonymity. Evidently love has once again "made a fool" of her and she is dealing with it the way she has before. She reflects on how she as the creative spirit she is she can not be suppressed in a relationship and be content. A relationship seems to end up half of me and half of someone else. But what about my other half. I have been and known people like that. Joni was a beautiful young woman, genius artist poet. The petty wars could never distract her for long.

@[TrueThomas:37238] I much prefer your interpretation over any that imply it was just another lost romance song.

@[NAwlinsContrarian:35906] The fame part is just her wanting to become famous.
She imagines her abusive pseudo friends running to the flame of fame and being more respectful hoping to benefit in some way from her success.

Cat Stevens – Fill My Eyes Lyrics 4 years ago
This is maybe my favorite Cat Stevens song. I have included it in acoustic sets for decades. I casually thought it was about a relationship but now I think it is more of a spiritual song.

It comes from a place of waking one morning feeling incomplete unable to "make no headway" on life's road. Yet everyday his eye are filled with aspiration for grace and desire for meaning. But life is frustration and his wheels won't roll leaving him feeling empty and unable to grow. He did become a devout Muslim not long after renouncing his popstar "empty" life.

"Tea for the Tiller Man" is some of the best music of the 60s in case you missed it.

Peace

Neil Young – Expecting to Fly Lyrics 4 years ago
I think this song is a reflection written to a former love that possibly was ended by him to pursue his music career. "If I never lived without you" I would have died in obscurity never pursuing his dream. After "years spent with feeling" it was painful having to choose but "by the end of summer" he felt he was healing. Maybe as times got hard he was having second thoughts wanting reasurrance of "the love he found knowing it was gone" and trying to laugh it off. He is reaffirming the love he had. He never really committed to the love but "now you know I'd try.

Cream – White Room Lyrics 4 years ago
First verse: describes a casual romantic encounter in the "black roof" part of town. He recalls an impression of something he saw in her "dark eyes", maybe a reflection. Dawn light sees them a bit giddy about a pleasant encounter but she is leaving.

Second verse: describes the scene at the station. She reminds him that it was a no-strings kind of encounter as the train is getting ready to go. They say good by through the train window. As he "walked out" the station a sadness comes over him as he begins to realize it wasn't so casual for him after all.

Third verse: describes how he met her at a party. He considered her a distraction to console a past emotional wound. A groupie? She is just "window dressing" for a tired starling or "old world song bird". A metaphor for singer?

Choruses: He contemplates going back to his life which he considers dark and lonely "where the shadows run from themselves". He realizes he must deal with his feelings and wait hoping she might return to him.

The Band – Chest Fever Lyrics 6 years ago
A song about a prostitute he develops an attachment to. I know he said the lyrics were just knockoff but maybe later in life didn't want to own them.

"I know she's a tracker "
Track is a slang term for location where prostitutes attract customers.

"Any style that would back her"
Any style you want if you have the cash.

"They say she's a chooser (or juicer makes more sense)"
Friends tell him she is an alcoholic. Nothing but trouble but...

"But I just can't refuse her"
She is good at it or he has developed an infatuation with her.

"She was just there, but then she can't be here no more"
Job finished. She is off to other customers.

"And as my mind unwheels
I feel the freeze down in my knees
But just before she leaves, she receives"

Every man knows the freeze right before he ejaculates.
She receives his ejaculate and leaves.

"She's been down in the dunes And she's dealt with the goons"
She has been working in some sleazy place where she services goons

"Now she drinks from a bitter cup. I'm trying to get her to give it up."
She is giving blowjobs but he wants her to be his girlfriend.

"It's long, long when she's gone I get weary holding on
Now I'm coldly fading fast I don't think I'm gonna last very much longer"
He is infatuated and has a hard time being without her

"She's stoned said the Swede, And the moon calf agreed"
Casual comments from observers who are not infatuated.

"But I'm like a viper in shock With my eyes in the clock"
She charges by the hour maybe?
