He's talking about religion, god or something above simple mortals because there is no meaning in life and that causes him pain. One night he was stoned and prayed, and he felt something that alleviated him. But when he was clean he couldn't find it anymore so down he went again. He can't change because he was molded this way but probably he thinks he is punished for not being faithful to his prayer. Basically he is saying he can't give you hope because the only thing he knows is meaningless. Being down probably means being in the bad side not a simple depression. |

The part about walk walk walk to the man who is gonna make it all ok is about going to a psychiatrist because he is forced to go by his parents or someone with authority. He is on medication so he feels a dead sweat in his mouth, and he is acting dumb, numb by the drug like if he had a hay stack around his neck. He can't be himself but he is doing what they want him to do so leave him alone because he doesn't want to talk....
It's not about drugs but about medical drugs. May be he did something with another guy and they think he is being a bad influence for the other. May be it's just teenager problems, scool problems. I like it anyway |

I think this actually happens all the time between women and men. When she says what are you thinking now? or we don't talk anymore, meaning she needs chit chat, verbalization, any form of conversation to feel good, while he on the other side is perfectly happy until that very moment, but not from then on. So he walks out that door and nobody understand until someday he learns to talk a bit more, or she learns to feel confident. |

It's about fear, something that terrifies him. The closer it is the moment the more nervous he gets. Probably he spent many days avoiding thoughts about that thing but the moment has come and he can't barely admit it. I think this coud be fear to perform his music in public. His head on the door could be a shadow or reflection of him the night of the concert before opening the door which reminds him of his many defects. If he could had the faith or the face of the person he admires it would be easy, hence the make up.
Although I don't know much about who wrote this song or if Robert Smith had any scenic problem at all. Just my thoughts |

I think it's all about sex which has grown to something that she wants but the other doesn't (love, care, friendship) or just about sex addiction. I think it's the first. "I thought it would be fun" "all the other pills they were different" the pill is sex, only this time is not enough. I'm not sure about the nurse, maybe another sexual partner which no longer answer calls.
I remember watching the video on tv many years ago and feeling this connection with the music and the need to escape and run to nowhere. It helped me to connect with my repressed feelings. |

A bit late but here it goes my comment.
It's interesting to think in the story as some type of last thoughts while waiting to fall asleep of the pills. So she could be remembering the last date in the car and somehow changing from thoughts to delirium asking him to take her home or blaming him but I don't think the rest of the song fits too well, specially the "just tonight" doesn't fit with someone dying so instead it would be someone deciding to take the pills. Anyway to leave someone you love feels like dying so yeah, they are similar and the videoclip could have been done that way. It's evident that she is remembering a concrete moment when they were in the car at night, and she takes the decition to leave when she sees his eyes due to some car passing by.
I have found this song recently by absolute chance when clicking youtube links and it is so good it made me listen to it and since then I'm fascinated. Reminds me of Pink's"Just like a pill" only I see Pink's more like a sexual relation with love complications and this more like a love story that went wrong. |

I think she likes him ,a lot really, and they broke up because of him , so just for one night she'll stay and will give him the whole show, and even say it's all her fault but just for one last time.
She doesn't want more drama. She wants to forget the pain for a little while then leave him alone, so she is wondering if he ever knew her, if he is so dumb that he can't see the pain through her pose.
