Buffalo Springfield – Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing Lyrics 7 years ago
@[sparrowC:21037] Your first half is excellent. I feel you've gotten it
exactly. It's about Neil being the tortured artist, who has no confidence in himself. BTW, as someone else suggested wrongly, it wasn't the record company that didn't want Neil to sing this, it was
Neil himself who felt he was awful. Neil's nickname was "Clancy" and the singing reference is obvious. Also, "paint a gold nugget, you can't lay a claim," meaning if you write a crappy song, but dress
it up pretty, it's still false (crappy) you can't claim it's not. Neil was so insecure, as many artists were(are). If he couldn't even sing his
own words, then what's the point of even writing new ones. All in all,
you had a great interpretation.

Neil Young – Cowgirl In The Sand Lyrics 7 years ago
@[Hedges:20589] Liked your interpretation. You may be onto something, if
the first two verses refer to cowgirl and ruby- on a beach and in dust,
which kind of negates their value or lessens their importance, THEN the 3rd verse "Woman of My Dreams" could be seen as also
ironic, or out of place. Could mean there is no woman of his dreams, or at the very least what is a cowgirl doing on a beach, what is a ruby doing in the dust, and what is a woman doing in his
dreams? All are out-of-place, they don't belong there, and Neil feels
he couldn't possibly have a woman of his dreams.

@[SNAPDUDE:20585] This is good. You are right about the wedding invitation. Even if the meaning is vague, I now believe Neil was alluding to the invitation when he wrote that line. Thanks for it.

Neil Young – Cowgirl In The Sand Lyrics 7 years ago
@[JamesP:20583] This is the BEST interpretation of this song I've ever heard, and I bet ol Neil would even agree. Many of his early songs are about women, especially those who betrayed him, or played
"games" with him (same "games" which HE played on them). Yes,
married woman's wedding band rusting seems to be the right
direction to go here. Also, notice the specific word choices in the line "Is this not the way it seems?" He easily could have said "This is not the way it seems" Why didn't he? Well, he's not sure of what's
happening, but he knows they have no future. Was this Neil's first
love? BTW, the title has NOTHING to do with Spanish beaches, but
California beaches and country girls (as in his later "Country Girl",
who could be this girl, but is definitely song-related to her, compare
the two songs, it's interesting)
