Modern Baseball – Casket Lyrics 7 years ago
So this song is pretty self-explanitory, but I do believe it sets such a meaningful tone for this EP and the time Brendan and Jake were at in their lives when writing this.
Casket essentially sums up what it is like to be a young adult, in a world where everyone around you lacks the motivation to do something 'meaningful' with their lives. However, interestingly Casket explores what it means for something to be 'meaningful', which I personally appreciate.
Most of these acquaintances talked about in the song seem to have powerful 'connections' to a world bigger than themselves but Modern Baseball truly evaluates, in the same witty, sarcastic way they always do, how waiting around for opportunities to 'fall in your lap' will not get you far at all. Casket values hard work and go-getters, not high school graduates who said they would do something great with their lives and instead are residents in their parents' basements, smoking weed and picking up odd retail shifts here and there to cover the expenses. Casket speaks to the risk-taking explorers among us, those who are not scared of failure or making bold choices.
Overall the true touch that makes this song unique is the contrast made between dreams and reality; Casket is angry at the 'dreamers' of society for not taking initiative, idolising events like the firing of shotguns at your parent's graduation. Blah, right? However, truly ironic is that Modern Baseball themselves must have been dreamers at one stage in their lives, so I guess what they're trying to convey is that dreams are a good foundation, but we need to build from there ourselves, not relying on fate and destiny to fall our way.
And finally, the last verse, to me, is a summing up of all the rage and aggression felt towards those that doubt people 'chasing their dreams'. Modern Baseball clearly have a need to be remembered, but as Casket rightfully conveys: Don't we all?

Regina Spektor – Hero Lyrics 7 years ago
@[jlawren3:19598] wow I really like this! At first I was thinking it was about communism (due to her background) and phrases like 'TVs trying to rape us' I guessed could be talking about the censorship and what not. However I do really like your contrasting take!
