This song is NOT "Don't Misunderstand!" by Gordon Parks. It's "I concentrate on You" written by Cole Porter in 1940!

@[poetryman:18926] You are closest in your explanation, but whoever typed the original lyrics probably got the spelling wrong as it is clearly a boy in the Ode. But the pregnancy is only conjecture and really has nothing realistic to do with it, a simple case of a one-sided love affair with the girl feeling guilty about it, so she throws flowers in the river -- it makes her feel better and is a normal deed.

@[ToodyGirl:18925] We think your interpretation is probably pretty correct. It's plain and simple, although sad in a sense. Maybe she is pining for him still, who knows, but she does remember him and probably always will.

@[ewing75062:18924] Oh baloney! Why bring a gay relationship into this song, it ruins it as it was very unlikely! She probably turned him down, he loved her, and it must have made him despondent, and she feels bad about it and throws flowers into the river to remember him. They were young, and in the South, where such things DID happen and were talked about more than now, but at the dinner table, she didn't want to respond to any comments.

I think the commenter under "+2 Song Meaning" is closest to reality. "I saw HIM at the Sawmill" denotes that Billy Joe was a male, although in the South, they may have spelled it different, but I think whoever typed the lyrics originally should have used the male spelling, Nonetheless, "+2's" meanings is the most realistic. No big deal, really, at the dinner table, to the rest of them, but she doesn't want to say anything about it, understandably.
