The first verse of the song is explaining that a woman is in a car at an unsafe speed. She has gotten into a fight, most likely with her partner so she decides to drive off to calm down. "You're trying to stay awake" signals that it might be late at night. The chorus is saying that the woman is at death's door and that the highway doesn't care who you are and will show no mercy. The second verse tells how she is with God, talking to him about the person she got into a fight with. While driving, she's on the verge of tears and she's holding them back all while trying not to go back home. She's not answering her phone which tells the partner that her phone is dead. She then starts to sing along with the song that is on the radio to forget the fight. The combination of tiredness, tears in her eyes, the fact that she was not paying attention to the road, along with her checking or plugging in her phone caused her to crash. |
