This song is about how life is much more than what people normally realize. Modern living is so busy with daily routines and the latest fads (sports tournaments, movies and series, political news, newest cellphones, games, fashion accessories, bands, etc) that we fail to realize that "this" isn't actually "all there is". "This" is only the way things are. If we wanted, we could make anything else we wanted to - culturally, economically, etc. We could actually create a colony on the Moon or solve world hunger but we're just too fixed in out ways to try - and even worse, most people are actually content to live this way instead of being hungry enough for a better world to even consider doing better. People constantly "balance on a rail of pain just for a pail of rain" instead of turning this world into the living paradise it could be. Crime, corruption, racism, etc - all things that are parts of our society but that only happen due to shortness of vision, avarice, smallness. It's so ingrained that it makes me "kneel to pray like one devout" and wonder that if God exists, he must be a "useless modern God" because otherwise he would help us achieve a better world to live in, for me, you and everyone else. "There's an endless disposition" to make the world better - people are always willing to donate to charity or vote for change but "it doesn't mean a god damn thing" because those actions are just for show: no one is willing to put the effort into actual change - the type that doesn't need money or government for it to happen. "There's space for a paper airplane race in the eye of a hurricane", meaning that so much is possible even in adverse conditions: even if money and the law aren't by your side, you can still create a better world just for your own friends and family. Imagine if we all did! "This pedestrian knows better than to even try" to change the world, because the world at large doesn't want to change, they're happy to live in a gray, dull world of pollution, ecological devastation, competition and rampant crime. I hurt for a better world for everyone but "my divinity is caught between the colors of a butterfly": it's so small and constrained but at the same time sublime and beautiful... So if you've read this far tell me, once again, as a friend: could THIS be all there is?! |

Most people here go straight to the conclusion that "I'm a freak" means to be different, special and cool but I think it goes well beyond that. Consider this verses: I don't really know / How to put on a cool show If only I could be as cool as you Just tell me where to go This is either Daniel telling us of his own insecurities as a musician- that he really doesn't think he's as good as other artists; or he is here criticising people that conform to society and just follow others blindly instead of accepting their own inner deviant freak. In this second case he's talking as if they were them while the "I'm a freak" chorus is actually about himself in contrast. In either case I take the first stanza to be an example of the dullness he's criticising of those who try to be cool and fail. It's offensive, sounds cool, rhymes but actually is empty, useless, devoid of any actual meaning: No more maybes Your baby's got rabies Sitting on a ball In the middle of the Andes |

This song talks about how humans were once gods (we are to be unaware of what we have been before) and even now still able to achieve their highest potential (we're symbols of perfection, humanoids ruined by your laws) by a system that is programmed to subdue each newborn men into slavery (destroy, erase, improve, lesson first: submission, we're docile servant dogs). This system of oppression becomes like an entity of its own (our leashes are your limbs / another thousand fakes that obey to a circuit skein to vacuum) - it may not be alive but it pulses with it's own rhythm (an even strobe, a pulse of flashing, hatelights of synthetic souls mass-produced, hammered into shape) and it's cogs press human potential into nothingness, pain and misery (here I am in the hand of a sterile hate - the new control, I can not wake, I'm not asleep). Truly a great industrial transcendent heavy metal song. Reminds of the premise from the Kult role-playing game. An excerpt from Wikipedia:: > The entire world we see is an "illusion" held together by monotheistic belief, which is unravelling to reveal a darker backdrop where nightmarish monsters lurk, called "reality" in the game. This illusion was created by the Demiurge to hold humanity prisoner and to prevent mankind from regaining the divinity it once had. Seems to me to be a song about the essential nature of human life - one which is closer to the natural world and joy instead of the misery brought forth by modern society. The line "The angels cried, you've heard them weep" will be expanded in the album Angel's Cry and is very directly about modern sorrow and the false illusion of happiness of modern society. This song also says that once someone finds this "inner voice", more in touch with their own nature and the natural world it's also a duty to pass the word forward and tell people that a simpler life of love to everything around you is better than living what some would call "the american dream" - working your life away in exchange for money to buy petty possession that never seem to bring us true happiness. "now it's time to make them sing!" is an example of this responsibility - and for singing you don't need anything but your own voice and maybe a guitar to go along with it, something much easier to acquire than say a car or a luxury apartment. "people think they're kings" references how people think they need so many luxuries to be happy or fulfilled. "Don't wait 'till someone else agrees" shows that you'll likely be one in a hundred by refusing the "standard" way of life and if you're waiting for someone to tell you it's OK to look for true happiness then you'll never do it because everyone else is obsessed with money and competition. "Swimming naked of beliefs and responsibilities / mother nature brings to me in fantastic purity everything I need" - again shows that humans can be happy with next to nothing and that modern pressures like credit card bills, taxes, health insurance and so on makes us distant from these ideals. Those with literary knowledge will notice the bucolic themes here are probably inspired by the Romantic movement and is also found in many other Angra songs from this era. I don't think this song is telling you to drop everything and go live naked near a lake in the woods but instead just to remember that we stress way too much about things that are not important or that don't bring us happiness. We should be more worried about our own well-being than having the most high-paying job or latest car model. The simple things in life like singing, dancing, swimming and loving are abundant and most of the time free of charge. |

A song about how a person can feel empty, depressed, lonely and unfulfilled, withdraw from the world (nobody cares / no needs, no hope / I've lost my pride) but actually at some point realize his life was actually pretty good despite these feelings (Time gone by, and life wasn't bad). Once you realize your life is precious things will fall back into place once again (See, the birds are back) - even if they were always there but your own demeanor just prevented you from noticing. Ultimately the world is a wondrous place and even if you can't help but think you're in a bad luck streak there's always magic somewhere to be found if you only care to look for it (This whole world so strange and divine). The two lines I haven't got fully figured out: 1. Lord, light my way (seems to be a hint to the fact that if you instead of wallowing in self-pity turn yourself into a higher purpose like that of God's it will help you realize the world's true beauty). 2. Skies are falling down (could be a call back to the moments of hopelessness since the sky falling down can symbolize great turmoil; or perhaps more likely a soothing rain that comes cleanse the world around you and yourself, bringing inner and outer peace). This theme of feeling bad about yourself only to be reborn in some sort of inspired awakening is constant in André Matos lyrics, for example Make Believe (I, after all / Just a lonely man / Faced the circunstances / Cleared up the shades) and ZITO (Down the weakness of my soul / Lie the secrets, and I know / Mother nature brings to me / Everything I need ). |
