Concrete Blonde – Tomorrow, Wendy (Andy Prieboy cover) Lyrics 4 years ago
I remember the song when it came out, incredibly powerful at that time (and still is!). You have to put a couple of things into context; the time when the song was written, and the general western view of the Christian God in North America.

First the time period - 1990's the height of AIDS and the incredibly hateful views of "Christians" towards AIDS patients - too many they thought (and still do) that the disease was "God's punishment towards the impure sexuality of the LGBTQ community" (the Sodom and Gomora complex). So this song was a statement that AIDS was killing people - people, not animals, not "deviants" human beings that need love - the love that Christ supposedly teaches Christians and these same Christian leaders (priests, pastors, reverends, etc...)

It is complete now ==> the disease is taking her to the end of life
Two ends of time are neatly tied ==> the alpha and the omega
A one-way street
She's walking to the end of the line
And there she meets
The faces she keeps
In her heart and mind ==> her lovers, her friends, those who
They say
"Goodbye" ==> sarcastic goodbye a hateful goodbye
Tomorrow Wendy you're going to die

Next, the Christian view - Western Christianity, many hold to the view that God is a God that punishes, (Old Testament), when it suits them and conveniently forget the New Testament - the new covenant that God is one of Love - no longer the God who punishes His children - and we are all His children and to illustrate He sends His child - Jesus - to upon him all the suffering to breaking the curse and set the true battle between the Enemy (Satan) and God.

This is the most powerful part

I told the priest
Don't count on any second coming
God got his ass kicked
The first time he came down here slumming
He had the balls to come
The gall to die
And then forgive us
No, I don't wonder why,

This is Wendy saying I don't understand what the priests have been preaching why did He come Why did He die and Forgive us?? it doesn't make sense... Why did he come and teach Love and people who call themselves Christians are hateful!! Wendy doesn't understand that Jesus came to save her soul, and make way for her to heaven - regardless of who she is, what she has done, - that's when Wendy begins to wonder???

I wonder what he thought it would get us

Next lines continue the confusion - and yet in a bizarre twist the understanding of God!

Hey hey
Goodbye
Tomorrow Wendy is going to cry
Only God says "jump" ==> this is actually the Satan/Enemy saying jump, commit suicide it's NOT God!

So I say "in good time" ==> here Wendy challenges the Enemy and says No on my terms - same as Jesus said to Satan when he was tempted.

Cause if he ever saw it
It was through these eyes of mine ==> now the understanding of God - He sees through our eyes He lives in us and sees the shit happening! It's a huge spiritual battle going on here on Earth.

And if he ever suffered
It was me who did his crying ==> and if God is suffering for us, we do His crying here on Earth - some call these God's tears

Hey hey
Goodbye ==> the Goodbye is not sarcastic it is said from a friend, a lover saying goodbye with love.

Tomorrow Wendy's going to die

Powerful song, powerful lyrics that sum up the battle that we humans are caught in between, there are people doing the Enemy's work, and people who truly are doing God's work, but sometimes those people fall into the wrong side...

A powerful song that I still listen to, as it reminds me of friends I lost in the 1980's and 1990's to AIDS and the bitter battle I witnessed between Priests and the sick and dying.

Footnote

Yesterday - July 29, 2019 6:30 PM on the train that I was riding, (Go Train Kitchener, Ontario Canada) a person jumped in front of our train (confirmed with the conductor), I don't know why, but I saw the responses of the people - some understood the gravity of the situation and prayed for that soul, others more concerned that they were going to be late for dinner...

Sorry hit submit to quickly.

One man on a beach - Jesus stood alone the beach John 21:4 " but when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus"

The barb wire is an interesting one, many different possibilities here. I lean towards the Bush of thorns, which is what the original barb wire was developed (thorn bush) . Eden did not have thorns, they were created by God after the original sin Genesis 3:18. And then Jesus refers to burning bush (thorn bush) that the dead are raised Luke 20:37.

Just a thought.

A great song, a gifted artist and a man who has received many gifts from God :-)

Peace!

There different interpretations and by no means do I know the true meaning that Richard had, but I listen to this many times on my commutes and to me there is religious connotations. You'd be surprised by how many artist do this but won't le on because it may impact their image that the record company want projected.

Now keep this in mind I'm NOT a bible thumper or any righteous individual :-) Lord knows me well :-)

So try this.

1. Heaven is the whole of the heart - that is in reference to many biblical comments by Jesus about filling your heart to God.

2. There's too many kings Want to hold you down. That is a direction reference to Jesus lecturing the Pharisees on holding the laws against the people and misusing God's directions.

3. There's a song on the air With a love-you line And a face in a glass And it looks like mine.
This one is a cool reference to what Jesus sai to the Pharisees who tried to trick him when they tried to say what's the 2nd important law?? Jesus replies Love thy neighbor as you love yourself - i.e the face in a glass :-

4. And I scream at the fools Want to jump my train. People who jump your train is a reference to those who want derail you.

It's not a hard stretch.

Did they have other songs that are completely no related to religion or hav religious connotations, absolutely - Pretty in Pink!

Any ways it's a different perspective and I love the song since it came out during my university days and I'd get up and dance to it by myself :-)
