The Smiths – I Know It's Over Lyrics 7 years ago
@[ilan:15738] I like this interpretation a lot, I agree with especially the part about remaining gentle and kind as it is hard to want to be happy for someone else who you long to be with very much but cannot because of the circumstances.

I saw it similarly except, these two people, never actually were officially together, because of the line:
I know it's over
And it never really began
But in my heart it was so real
His last hope was clinging onto the idea it could happen but now she is getting married and its just struck him it will never happen.
But thats not the saddest part, the saddest past is that she loved him back too. And despite loving each other, for whatever reason they never were in a relationship (maybe only friends) and she's in a relationship and getting married. So theres nothing she can do and nothing he can do either.
She's not happy because she loves this other man who she's never been with, and he loves her back too, and they both know this, hence the line :
Love is natural and real
But not for such as you and I, my love
Their love alone cannot bring them together because life hasn't worked out for them that way and theres nothing they can do.

Hope you didn't mind my additions, my idea kinda just bounced of your lovely interpretations, thank you!

Joy Division – Insight Lyrics 8 years ago
I guess some of us can all relate to this song in some way. For me I relate and interpret it in that someone has lost interest in life because of experiences which has caused them to gain a deeper 'Insight' into life's meaning.

I also regard it as signs of depression but the song suggests very real things that happen in life (such as dreams dying from when you were younger, watching people fall in life/things go wrong for friends, being told what to think), which justify that you are not depressed and just have a different view on life and as the title is called an Insight and understanding into the truth of what life is and what it does to people.

Okay here goes:

Guess you dreams always end.
They don't rise up, just descend,

The opening lines especially relate to me as since starting uni I feel any dreams and hopes I did have for the future have been destroyed and you've only just starting to come to terms with this.

But I don't care anymore,
I've lost the will to want more,

Here these lines are conveying that this feeling of worthlessness in life, and the feeling of being let down, has caused you to stop caring about the things you once did, and that you've lost the spark/hope to want more out of life and you'd rather just stay stagnant as you don't feel there's anything to work towards.

I'm not afraid not at all,
I watch them all as they fall,

Not afraid to die or commit suicide.
You see friends or people around you suffer the same. Watching friends fall/ things go wrong in life for them too and there is nothing you can do about it.

But I remember when we were young.

However the 'But' suggests it hasn't always been like this and he can remember a time where he didn't have this insight which changed his mind on things.
Maybe also he's not completely ready to go through with it yet as he can still look back on when you were younger and had all the dreams for the future and you can remember how it used to feel like but you just can access the feelings anymore.

Not sure on the middle verse, maybe -

Those with habits of waste,
Their sense of style and good taste,
Of making sure you were right,
Hey don't you know you were right?

Those in high authority have control of you and tell you whether your actions are right or wrong, and not yourself defining who you are.
Being told that you have been wrong about something by someone else just because they are perceived to be better than you, when in fact you are right according to your own judgement not anyone else's. The 'Hey' and the '?' seems to imply that it's too late for them to realise that they were right.

Tears of sadness for you,
More upheaval for you,

Predicting that it will just get harder from here on, once you realise and have this insight on life, you can't just change it because you feel you are right. And things in life you try at, or already have will slowly become chipped away at (more upheaval for you).

Reflects a moment in time,

Over thinking/over analysing

A special moment in time,
Yeah we wasted our time,

It seems here that reflecting on any good times are perceived to be a waste of time now, and rather than focusing on the positive instead is focusing on the negatives (discounting the positive). The 'Yeah', shows the casual agreement that this must be the only view on life that is correct.

We didn't really have time,

Not enough time to truly enjoy things you once did, and looking back on it all you realise all the moments you missed and all the wasted time you could have been doing something good/productive. ANd now it just seems all too late to change that.

Not sure on what the last verse means, but 'I'm not afraid any more means the person has come to terms with how the are and feel and essentially are not afraid to die either naturally or at the hands of themselves.

It's how a different/deeper insight has changed an entire outlook on life, including the past and the future even though the future has not happened yet.

Morrissey – I'm Not Sorry Lyrics 8 years ago
I get the impression this song, is not just about love but life in general, and that he used to have many aspirations and desires for the future, but non of them panned out as expected.

Any expectations he had for life have been destroyed. e.g he wanted to meet 'the woman of his dreams' but she 'never came along'.-something which he values a lot.

He is also reflecting back on his life and everything he has done, and, he has come to conclusion that life has no meaning as suggested by the lyric 'Its all a game. Existence is only a game', therefore he feels does not care about everything he has done which is why he says 'I'm not sorry'.

However, there is still a small hope someone will save him because he wants help, but he realistically knows he will be rejected:
Reject my hand,
And,
The damage is done

I believe that this song is about mental illness, as many of his songs seem to imply or essence. In this case it can describe depression, (or certainly I relate to it in this way.)

I'm,
Slipping below the water line,
I'm,
Slipping below the water line

The repetitions throughout the song as well indicate this, as life feels repetitive and mundane. He is slowly and gradually slipping into a new state of thoughts and feelings which are clearly, as shown by the rest of the lyrics, not positive/idealistic ones but a depressing state of mind.
Depression also can feel like drowning, suffocating, trapping, as you are gradually encompassed across all aspects of life with these thoughts and feelings until it becomes a part of you and you can't remember or know what it's like to feel differently or whether you ever did. This water analogy has been seen across lots of media references, such as Hannibal (tv series), and Submarine.

The line 'Oh, when will this tired heart stop beating?' also supports this interpretation.

In regard to the last line 'There's a wild man In my head', could also indicate that the hope he wants back (the hand to save him from slipping into the water/depression) is teasing him, because he knows it will never happen yet it taunts him in his mind, reminding him of what he could have had but does not.

This ofc is just my opinion on what the song means, rather biased interpreted as well.
thanks if you read!

Morrissey – Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself Lyrics 8 years ago
Peoples comments mention the music industry, and I also, although probably based on that, that it can be applied to many other situations which means the listener can relate to it somewhat.

Its like telling someone the truth about something or how they feel about something and the other person doesn't care or more importantly doesn't believe it,

Why don't you find out for yourself?
Then you'll see the glass
Hidden in the grass

It's like when you've given up trying to get your opinion and thought across so you just tell them they'll find out one day for themselves. Then they will eventually see the glass in the grass but it'll be too late then, as you only see it once you've stepped on it because the truth is made to be very hidden and concealed, so they wont understand until they have experienced first hand too.

There is also a very solemn acceptance of this issue:

But that's just the way it goes

Morrissey – I Like You Lyrics 8 years ago
I never saw it in terms of friendship but I'm really glad some of you saw it that way, because it makes much more sense and applicable to one of my closest friendships and my sister.
Plus it is much more cheerier and positive (than my original interpretation) if you think of it in terms of friendship and siblings as the lines:

Why do you think I let you get away,
With all the things you say to me?
Could it be I like you

It's just banter.

Otherwise I originally saw it in terms of a relationship with 2 people who are going through mental health issues that affect their relationship with one another. The lines:

'Why do you think I let you get away,
With all the things you say to me?'

I saw as themes of negativity and not playful teasing, and more in terms of arguments. However the fact he still likes this person, and clearly this person feels the same back because of the line:

Because we're thinking the same lines

However I don't see it as an emotionally abusive relationship, as the lines also suggest there are good aspects of the relationship

They look at you and I, and,
Envy makes them cry

and

You and I just smile

Suggesting that the other people are envious because they are still making it work and still like each other despite the underlying themes of mental health issues.
I came to this conclusion about mental health, due to the first line

You were going through something,
I had just about scraped through

I see this in terms of perhaps something mental health related, and they are both going through some form of struggle in life. And the lines regarding the other person being unlike anyone else:

This is good or bad, all depending on,
My general mood

Suggest (I loosely use this symptom) mood swings, and swing from liking then disliking the other person. And obviously the final lines:

You're not right in the head and nor am I,
And this why
This is why I like you

Clearly is ironically saying that there something wrong, mentally, with them both.

The choice words and the way the song keeps bouncing back and forth from good and bad, before settling on those lines, indicates a love/hate relationship seen especially in borderline personality disorder. Here an individual suffering from BPD may go from really blindly loving someone to downright hating them for all sorts of underlying issues, which ofc can lead to frequent arguments.

That was my original view anyway, and I still think that the meaning could be that. However in terms of friendship I see the song as much more mischievous and fun-which is way more happier and positive.

Morrissey – First Of The Gang To Die Lyrics 8 years ago
I love everyone's interpretations!

When I listen to it I always get a gang subculture theme and the loyalty/emotional ties people have when being or growing up in gangs- that's my impression anyway.
I also love the beat to it, this song always gets stuck in my head.
