Shinedown – Enemies Lyrics 3 years ago
“Enemies” is a badass song because Brent is talking directly to the devil.

“Listen up! There's not a moment to spare. It's quite a drop from the top, so how you feeling down there?”
The devil is the one who took a “drop from the top” by falling from Heaven. Brent is speaking to him from above (“how you feeling down there”) because Brent is on the side of good with Heaven which is above and the devil is beneath Brent's feet.

“It's a cold, cruel, harsh reality, caught, stuck, here with your enemies”
The devil is stuck here on Earth with his enemies, which are Shinedown and anyone who is a warrior who fights for good in the world.

“Who do you think you are? Tearing us all apart?”
That’s what the devil does: he steals, kills, and destroys, and messes with people, makes them hurt each other and do evil things.

“Where did you think you could go? Cause everyone already knows, it’s twenty to one, so you better run!”
When Satan fell to the Earth, so did the angels who followed him, but there are twice as many angels who stayed with God, so Satan is outnumbered and as they say in church, he is already defeated. God is infinitely more powerful than the devil, so Brent isn’t wrong to exaggerate the odds against the devil beyond the two-thirds of the angels. If anything, it is truly much more than that, but it does make the point that the devil doesn't stand a chance.

“You started something that you just couldn't stop, You turned the ones that you love into the angriest mob. And their one last wish is that you pay for it and there's no way you're getting out of this!”
When the devil fell, he took some angels with him and they turned into any angry mob of demons. He will pay for it at Judgment Day and there’s nothing that’s going to stop that and nothing he can do about it.

“You’ve got the world on its knees, you’re taking all that you please”
The devil’s domain is Earth and he is causing a lot of destruction and evil down here.

“You want more, but you’ll get nothing from me”
The devil knows he’s going down and wants to take as many people with him as he can, but he’s not getting Brent and Brent is not going to give the devil anything that he wants.

“You’re like the burden we bear, you’re all the hate that we share”
The devil is hate and brings with him a burden of sin.

“You want more, but you’ll get nothing from me, but enemies!”
The devil wants to destroy everyone that he can, but not only is Brent not going to give in to him personally, but Brent is going to help put people back together, to bring more people to the light, to goodness, to love, to God, which in turn creates more enemies for the Devil. Badass!

I have felt the presence of God at Shinedown concerts stronger than I have at most churches. If you don’t know what that is like, I hope that someday you do. I’m not forcing anything on anyone as I hate it when people do that; it's annoying and heavy-handed. I’m just being honest with how I read this and it seems pretty clear to me.

Shinedown is an awesome band and deserves all the success they have achieved. They truly are a force for good and have helped so many people who have been “beat up by the falling of the arrows” whose “bones are shattered” to “get up” and get a “second chance” to show the world how they loved.

I can’t edit my previous post, but this is a correction to it, so please read this version:

This song is incredible.

Its beautiful message of purposeful strength and rebellion is soothing when living through dark times in your life.

The singer is letting you in to shake him down. As it relates to addiction, a shakedown is forceful removal of contraband, so he is opening himself up for you to check him for drugs (from the rest of the song, we know you won’t find anything). A shakedown is also a thorough search of something, so he is also inviting you to search his soul as he shares it with you through his story in this song.

The singer notes, “Not a lot of people left around” which could refer to him watching people dying from addiction or the fact that addiction is a disease that alienates you from those you love.

The singer first speaks about seeing other people choosing to drown in their past memories and misery (walk into the sea) and fix their eyes on death (the ground). He then talks about himself and speaks about his own painful experiences. How he was hurt by something he thought was good (cut by a silver cloud – alluding to a silver lining – possibly drugs) and how he has been in the sea himself with his bittersweet memories (no love between the sheets, taste the blood, broken dreams, lonely times indeed) and fixed his eyes on death as the others have, but he makes the conscious decision that he will not be like those others or his past self and he will look up and live (I’ll keep my eyes fixed on the sun).

The song transitions and he says he won’t turn back (turn back – no), it’s time to let the past go (it’s time for me to let go), he is way down at the lowest point in his life (way down), but he will lay low and recover (had to find a place to lay low); and for a long time his light was hidden under a shade of darkness/addiction/pain (lampshade), but he will turn it around and become a light, tall and shining for all to see (turned around into a light post). Light posts can be seen shining the way on dark roads, so he can serve as a light for others out of the darkness.

He says his painful experience in the past caught him by surprise (never saw it coming) and nearly killed him (almost stopped me from belief), but he defiantly states he doesn’t want to know the future because no matter what comes, he won’t be afraid, he’s strong like the rolling thunder in the middle of the storm and he will keep looking up to the sun, even on dark cloudy days when it can’t be found.

As a person who has survived an addiction to abusive relationships, this song speaks so clearly about the pain of addiction and the choice to live and leave it behind.

One last thing – I was also raised with a Christian background as were some of the band members, and though I always loved this song, I never realized until today thinking about it, that the phrase, “I’ll keep my eyes fixed on the sun” could also refer to Hebrews 12:1-2 which reads, “Let us run with endurance the race set out before us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus…” who is the Son (the sun).

I have no words for that kind of beauty and intelligence; this is a masterpiece.
