Coldplay – Yellow Lyrics 7 years ago
@[christianv:13853] that is a great tale of how you have made the song yours. That said, the song is about absolutely nothing, as ColdPlay have confirmed in several interviews. That you can make a song about nothing into something, makes the song special, and yours, especially a touching one.

Elton John – Border Song Lyrics 8 years ago
"Let us strive to find a way to make all hatred cease
There's a man over there
What's his colour I don't care
He's my brother let us live in peace"

Above makes it difficult to speculate much about the meaning, even if the earlier versus are ambiguous. The end is quite clear.

And if the environment around you is "poisoned" by bigotry, and you feel "deceived" by political "winds" blowing the wrong way, then you too will "have to leave" to where "people" may not be your "kind", but "your affairs are not abused".

The Stranglers – Always The Sun Lyrics 8 years ago
Somethings never change. And, that can be a good thing when see bickering politicians, kids being treated unfairly in school, lose your money gambling, passed up on a good job....when all else fails, there is always the sun.

The Style Council – The Whole Point Of No Return Lyrics 8 years ago
Paul Weller shouts to the bottom (not top!) this time, telling the servile class they can revolt, in a socialist anthem that is beautifully composed. It shoots an arrow through both classism/elitism and capitalism, attacking the principles of inheritance, which assures the criticized state, can retain its grip.

The lyrics imply a violent revolution is necessary (mightiest arrow ...to shoot ....to rid of all world of their kind....just one blow...), a message that certainly not without its own criticism.

I listen to this song alone, and sing along, even if I don't agree with its angry advice on how to level the playing field.

Tears for Fears – Memories Fade Lyrics 8 years ago
"Memories fade but the scars still linger". This is one of the axioms in the lexicon of life, and if you are a person who does not carry a scar as described, you have not lived.

To think a 19 year old wrote these words, makes me feel like I didn't ponder enough. Bravo Orzabal.

Supertramp – Rudy Lyrics 8 years ago
Rudy, the chubby procrastinator who never does anything with his life, as he is under the shadow (world's above him) an unfair life. His passed the stage of being able to redirect his life with good advice. He is only happy under the temporary escapes, movies, and perhaps alcohol/drugs (back on his train).

Supertramp – Gone Hollywood Lyrics 8 years ago
"I'm in this dumb motel near the Taco Bell", an axiomatic statement whenever one is such a situation, in a lodging near a fast food chain. I love this line.

Tears for Fears – Famous Last Words Lyrics 8 years ago
I agree with @[border142:9555], this is a song about the last two people as the world has ended, due to (nuclear) war. They are enjoying their alone time, and perhaps final moments. At least they will "carry war no more" in their lives or hereafter.

Words like "decay", and "insects in grass" lead me to believe the war that happened was nuclear, creating radioactive decay leaving only cockroaches alive in its wake.

The rest of the words are very self explanatory.

Tears for Fears – Goodnight Song Lyrics 8 years ago
I always thought this song was about Curt Smith, his duo partner who Roland Orzabal once ousted from the band. Roland wrote almost everything for the band, and the Smith was not the best bassist. "Goodnight song, played so wrong / Blame the crowd, they scream so loud, so long / Get some honesty" This was Orzabal's first album after Smith was let go.

David Bowie – Life on Mars? Lyrics 8 years ago
@[georgy:9554] You are entirely correct, and I am afraid all other (lengthy) explanations are wrong.

Bowie actually gave an interview about writing this song, stating it came to him after a group of sailors got into a fight in a park, where he was one morning. He took the bus back to his studio and composed.

The girl protagonist can't find an escape from her family problems, not in film, not elsewhere. And on a larger scale, America's rise to power after the horizon of the British empire where once the sun never sat, is not without its own compromises. The escapes of media are insufficient to cope with bitter realities. As you have said, "is this the best we can do"? Gosh, I hope there is "Life on Mars", because this here is a mess.
