U2 – Mysterious Ways Lyrics 8 years ago
@[imagodoc:9143] I totally agree!
This is how I hear the lyrics to this amazing song. God is neither male nor female. OR wait, He is both male and female.
As a woman and a Catholic, I feel fortunate that the Virgin Mary is so much more than a Christmas decoration. She was fully human, but the still the most perfect human being ever created. As a parent, her supportive parenting was so instrumental that she recognized the very real circumstance that required a miracle. She tells Jesus that the wine is about to run out and ruin everything. At first he was like, "So what do you want me to do about it?" With her divine ability to be the perfect parent to Jesus, she explained the situation and explained that this was his opportunity to perform his first miracle.
Other Christian denominations eschew Catholics for venerating the human being, Mary and dismiss the essential role she played in giving birth, raising, and properly parenting our Saviour, Jesus.
I can't explain the spiritually uplifting honoring Mary as the Mother of Jesus gives a woman who is no more than a Christmas decoration to Protestant denominations. It's a shamefully misogynistic attitude that strips the divine role from Mary. Reducing her to no more than an incidental surrogate uterus that gave birth to Jesus is so wrong. Sure, point fingers at the Church because women can't be priests. Meanwhile. strip the Holy Mother and classify her as another insignificant harlot.
I find that absolutely appalling, contrary to Scripture, and a true disservice to not just the woman specifically created by God to bear, raise, and parent His son.
U2 proudly gives their gratitude to the very real feminine aspect of Christianity. Maybe they are singing about Mary or that female aspect of God. But women are honored and respected in this song. I feel this is so important to Christianity.
One of the things that sets Christianity apart from other monotheistic religions is how women are valued for their unique contributions.
So all the ignorant Bible-Thumpers can wring their hands over this song. Meanwhile, it gives me MASSIVE respect to U2 for writing and performing a song that recognizes the female component of Christianity, whether that be God, Himself, or Mary.

@[mhswlee:9141] Now that is an awesome interpretation of this song!
To me, the music just feels so happy to me. Thinking of this as a cynical "Cold War" song just doesn't seem to fit with the beautiful upbeat instrumental component of this song. The lyrics were kind of a downer.
But I really enjoyed your analysis which I feel are a great match between the melody and the lyrics.
Allow I can't put my finger on the reason, this song seems hopeful to me. This analysis captures the feelings I have listening to this song. One of my 10 favorite songs of all time!

@[Edgolfterp:9140] Me, too. I love, love the beautiful melody of this song. Hearing the first few bars puts a smile on my face. It might be because the video of bright and sunny desert scenes in the music video. The dancers during the musical break.
The lyrics seem rather cynical when analyzed.
So my imagination goes back to the sunny desert scenes in the video, as I sing along to the not so upbeat lyrics. This song is one of my very favorites of all time.
