Actually, (I found two possibilities) the song is about finding your past self you you think you got rid of but he never really left your side and that he'll always come back.: -"I thought you died alone, a long long time ago Oh no, not me I never lost control" Or (second possibility), This is the scary option, this song is about having a multi-personality syndrome and that he goes crazy and thinks that he found the man who sold the world: -"You're face to face With The Man Who Sold The World" Later in the song, "Bowie" starts to consider that since his horrible personality "died alone, a long long time ago" Bowie considers that maybe he is dead and that mankind is the man who sold the world: -"We must have died along, a long long time ago" ...
