I think this is a criticism of high class or high brow sensibilities. He's saying that things considered "crass" or underneath those with high taste like lil jon still carry truth, yet are undervalued. Vampire Weekend likes to hide irony within happy soudning music. With this, they used their preppy, sophisticated persona to satirize that very idea. Basically, they like to be clever bastards. |

The "yellow-glo" AK is possibly a reference to propaganda posters. The "lovely" t shirt turning history books grey may be a way of saying to experience the war in person is a completely different thing than reading about them.
This song is basically a juxtopositon of bad/good. War/Holiday, Happiness/Despair. Chaos/Order. I'm sure Ezra was referencing a specific conflict or possibly a personal connection with something but I think the general message is one of sympathetic irony towards the horrors of war. |
