Radiohead – Let Down Lyrics 6 years ago
Radiohead is ok, I’m not a huge fan, I only bought In Rainbows because I liked the distro model. I’ve enjoyed the records but I can go for a year or two without listening to them and not notice.

But this song, and specifically the last verse, the last part of the last verse before the chorus, is why I skip this song on shuffle. It is like holy music, that last cry, bursting up and out of the dirt, one clear and ringing note that takes the song from earthbound sorrow and frustration over into something much greater. That last note of the last verse before the final chorus pierces my heart like a silver spear and makes my eyes leak every single time.

American Music Club – I've Been a Mess Lyrics 7 years ago
There's a live version of this out there, and when he gets to that chorus I don't know that I've ever heard someone's heart being squashed and coming out as singing, not the way he does it.

Willie Nelson – Pancho And Lefty Lyrics 7 years ago
I'm in agreement re Lefty selling Pancho to the law. The bread he used to split for Ohio, the federales knowing just where to find him, but why bother? He's a tool and a traitor, forgotten and alone in wintry Ohio, and the taste of the dust his buddy bit will always stick with him. He's no threat. Pancho died in the saddle, forever youthful and trusting, while his buddy grows old and pale alone with his guilt. Seems pretty clear to me.

Curtis Mayfield – Do Do Wap Is Strong In Here Lyrics 7 years ago
I think this song is about a place where the do do wap is strong. I may be wrong.

Belle & Sebastian – The Cat with the Cream Lyrics 7 years ago
I hear the heartbeat of a child sitting alone in the kitchen, being quiet and "well-behaved" while somewhere in the house is a Bad Guy. The raging new boyfriend, listening for "the swoosh of his quickening paces." The child is watching its mother (or Kathy? Sister? Aunt?), wishing they were having better times-- that smile on the bravest of faces, how I wish you'd read to me... Finally there is an escape, here's your coat, now do exactly as I tell you.

The second verse totally torpedoes this. Unless the RNBf is a financier or politician who's lost his shirt? Maybe? I don't know man I didn't do it.

Throwing Muses – Hate My Way Lyrics 7 years ago
I feel a tremendous amount of anger and frustration in this song. The confusion of youth and the fury at all the people who have excuses to keep them from engaging with the world ("I could be a smack freak and hate society...")

But damn if the last lines don't lift up my heart every time. "They can no longer move, I can no longer be still." It's titled "Hate My Way," it's not a flowery hand-holding song; it's rage and accusation, it's Don't tell me why I shouldn't even try-- I am my own me and I won't stop. I've got those lines tattooed around my wrists, to remind me to never quit or give in to the ocean of sadness.

@[TheWrongGirl:15553] Yup. I get a blend of fury and sorrow. "They can no longer move, I can no longer be still" has been a personal credo for 25 years.

@[hardcorevelour:15552] bipolar. They were too early to really catch the wave of '90, which is a shame.

Belle & Sebastian – The Everlasting Muse Lyrics 8 years ago
For some reason I've decided this is about Lady Gaga. The songs Muse is a musician, songwriter, performer, and a very successful one. She doesn't have much time for this sensitive, coddling guy who wants to possess her and her talent, even when he appeals to her as a fellow musician. In the last verse she displays this effortless skill for writing music, just sort of tosses off this amazing "gift to modern rock" writes it on a napkin, and brushes him off. "Be popular, play pop."

Andrew Bird – Don't Be Scared Lyrics 8 years ago
Andrew Bird's older brother is "on the spectrum." This isn't a secret-- Tea and Thorazine is about being in care. I always suspected that Rennie Sparks wrote this for Andrew, for his brother. It's the first of her songs that he's recorded, until he finally just went and made a whole record of Handsome Family tracks.

Seen through that data, the song seems clear to me. This doesn't mean my eyes don't get foggy sometimes when I sing along.

The Magnetic Fields – Papa Was A Rodeo Lyrics 8 years ago
The Kelly Hogan version has always/will always make me bawl like a baby. The same kind of bawling brought on by Steve Goodman's The Dutchman. Romantic songs about very long relationships are the real gut-punchers.

@[YoMamaWasaRodeo:7257] I've always heard it as the joy of finding someone who was on the same page (and being lucky enough to have 55 years with them.)

For 30 years I was sure Mr Kamikaze/Mr DNA was an altruistic poobah. Which seems like a great thing to be, yeah?

The Fiery Furnaces – Benton Harbor Blues Lyrics 8 years ago
Btw, this record was recorded at Keyclub, a studio in Benton Harbor, a town I've spent some time in. Riding a bike in the snow to the minimart? Ha ha ok for sure.
