Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 6 years ago
I think the song is a commentary on the how there is temporary, artificial happiness that one can get through buying material goods, and that this has a destructive effect on nature. Mother nature would want humans to realize this.

Obviously, the song starts off with a woman in a store who fancies items in a store.

Line: "There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure, because 'cause you know sometimes words have two meanings"
Interpretation: Picture the word 'Sale'. Are you really getting a sale, or are you being ripped off?

Line: In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven." *Misgiven means to doubt or distrust*
Interpretation: The songbird represents nature, commenting that the way humans look at the world feel that it is not how the world actually is.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the West (Western, capitalist, materialistic society.. think California or USA) and my spirit is crying for leaving (being fed up being in a world where everything is materialistic)

"In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who stand looking."
- The protagonist is thinking about the harm materialism does to nature, and that people notice the damage it does, but do not do anything to prevent it.

"And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune,
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long,
And the forests will echo with laughter."
- This describes that if everyone comes together in their belief that nature should be protected, a leader [the piper] will show them what kind of harm they are doing to nature.
- The forest will echo with laughter (happiness) because they are saved from the destruction of materialism.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder.
- A person is surprised that Nature is causing a bustling in their hedgerow (artificial nature).... don't be alarmed, it's only nature
- You can either value nature, or materialism

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him, (The idea that subconsciously, you feel as though you should be one with nature)
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?
(Referring to the materialistic lady, a reminder that the winds of nature are real, and that she will not reach happiness because there is no foundation to her stairway)

And as we wind on down the road (As we walk down the road of life)
Our shadows taller than our soul. (Our sins bigger than who we are)
There walks a lady we all know (Materialistic lady)
Who shines white light and wants to show (She thinks she knows the answers)
How everything still turns to gold. (How nature can be destroyed and turned into something beautiful)
And if you listen very hard (Listen to the Piper calling you to respect nature)
The tune will come to you at last. (You will understand and realize what he is saying)
When all are one and one is all (There is an interconnectedness between the earth and humans)
To be a rock and not to roll. (To stay firm in your beliefs, and do not follow the way of the materialistic person)

And she's buying a stairway to heaven (And she still continues to buy items for happiness at the expense of the earth's natural resources.

Let me know what you think!

Billy Joel – Uptown Girl Lyrics 6 years ago
Known to be inspired by Billy Joel's relationship with [insert female's name here], I believe this song is a commentary on - for lack of better words:

Affluent white girls seeking tough, urban guys (some could argue 'black guys') for 'love'.

Lyrical Interpretations
"I bet she never had a back-street guy... I bet her momma never told her why"
- 'Back-Street' could mean a few things: Black, Lower-Class, Urban, Other ethnic type of man
- 'I bet her momma never told her why'... You know how sometimes family's tell her not to date black guys but don't tell them why? (Hint: 'Once you go black...)

"She's been living in her white-bred world"
- Living in a 'Whites-only' society (i.e. White people sleeping with other white people)
- Some may thing it's 'White Bread' world... although being rich is not necessarily white bread/boring

"As long as anyone with Hot Blood can... and now she's looking for her Downtown Man... that's what I am"
- Hot Blood = 'Having Strong Passions or Quick Temper" - Definition
- So... having strong passions and looking for a Downtown Man... She's clearly horny and not satisfied with her white boys

"And when she wakes up and makes up her mind... she'll see I'm not so tough just because I'm in love with an Uptown Girl"
- The key here is that she wakes up AND sees her downtown man - possibly indicating that she is making up her mind after they have slept together

"She's getting tired of her high class toys, and all her presents from her uptown boys...she's got her toys"
- Again... tired of material goods... she needs some serious lovin'

"But maybe someday when my SHIP comes in, she'll understand what kinda guy I've been... and then I'll win"
- Obviously, he can't afford a ship. And this ship is coming in (i.e. docking) into her port.. Get the Reference??
- And then I'll win. His big 'Ship' satisfies her more than a regular 'boat'... play on SIZE

"She's my Uptown Girl"
- Referencing that he occasionally dates her. Although they are from two separate areas... they occasionally have a 'connection'

In Summary, Downtown Man goes for Uptown Girl to give her the loving that her white-bred world can't give her.

R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics 8 years ago
@[Mausman:12669] You're absolutely right, you can't deny that it's about unrequited love because that's what the artist actually said it was about!

Does anyone remember that time in their life when they had the biggest crush on someone who just was not reciprocating?

"I thought that I heard you laughing... I thought that I heard you sing. I think I thought I saw you try...but that was just a dream"

Don't we all dream of the ideal situation, but in reality, nothing becomes of it?

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Soul to Squeeze Lyrics 8 years ago
I think when interpreting this song, it's important to know about the artist and singer, Anthony Kiedis. The singer has a known history of drug abuse (i.e. heroin, cocaine, LSD, etc.... particularly heroin).

I've got a bad disease
But from my brain is where I bleed. (Addiction: Also considered a disease, mental)
Insanity it seems (Doing the same thing over again, once again - Addiction)
Has got me by my soul to squeeze. (Soul to Squeeze, in my opinion, it is in his soul to squeeze - i.e. Squeeze his fist to inject heroin intravenously)

Well all the love from thee
With all the dying trees I scream. (Suffering alone, almost like dying)
The angels in my dreams (yeah)
Have turned to demons of greed that's mean. (Greed for more drugs)

Where I go I just don't know (Not sure where to go for help for his addiction)
I got to got to gotta take it slow. (Take it easy on the drugs man)
When I find my piece of mind (When my addiction is fixed)
I'm gonna give you some of my good time. (Be able to spend quality time with band / family / friends)

Today love smiled on me. (Someone showed him they care)
It took away my pain say please
All that you had to free (Be free of personal demons, perhaps ones fueling his drug addiction)
You gotta let it be oh yeah. (This will end your addiction)

Where I go I just don't know
I got to got to gotta take it slow.
When I find my piece of mind
I'm gonna give you some of my good time.

Oh, so polite indeed (Being cared for in rehab)
Well I got everything I need. (Has what he needs, and it's not heroin)
Oh make my days a breeze
And take away my self destruction. (Curing his drug addiction and self-destructive behaviour)

It's bitter baby,
And it's very sweet.(Bad but good drug use)
I'm on a rollercoaster,
but I'm on my feet.
Take me to the river,
Let me on your shore.
I'll be coming back baby,
I'll be coming back for more.

Doo doo doo doo dingle zing a dong bone
Ba-di ba-da ba-zumba crunga cong gone bad

I could not forget (Acknowledges drug use)
But I will not endeavor (promises not to do it again)
Simple pleasures aren't as special
But I won't regret it never. (Knows it feels amazing, and won't regret his drug use)

Where I go I just don't know
I got to got to gotta take it slow.
When I find my piece of mind
I'm gonna give you some of my good time.

Where I go I just don't know
I might end up somewhere in Mexico.
When I find my piece of mind
I'm gonna keep you for the end of time.

Daft Punk – Doin' it Right (feat. Panda Bear) Lyrics 8 years ago
I think this song is the message of the song is the following:
A good song is a song that people will dance to and will feel for. When you feel you are in 'the zone' making a good song, you have to keep at it all throughout the night. Remember, this song is about making people dance! (and about making a song about making people dance :P )

When I hear this song I picture a musician staying up all night making a song/track for people to dance to.

"If you do it right
Let it go all night
Shadows on you break
Out into the light"
Interpretation: If you are doing the right things to make the right song, keep going throughout the night as the shadows on you turn into light.

"If you lose your way tonight
That's how you know the magic's right"
Interpretation: There is a lyric in the song 'Beyond' (which is about making that 'perfect' original song) that goes "To find our way we lose control". So, the opposite would be, if we lose our way we gain control. Control over making a good, original song.
