alt-J – Fitzpleasure Lyrics 6 years ago
I have an interpretation of
"Dead in the middle of the C O double-M O N
Little did I know that
That the Mandela Boys soon become Mandela Men
Tall woman, pull the pylons down
And wrap them around the necks
Of all the feckless men that queue to be the next"

So, it's already established that this song was written about a gang rape, and I think this is the gang rape part of the lyrics.

The Common is a park in Southampton and the Mandela Boys are a gang that hang around there. "dead in the middle" of the park is the dead woman that was recently raped. "Little did I know that Mandela Boys soon become Mandela Men". The murder was an initiation process for the Mandela boys to be accepted as established members of the gang (Mandela men).
I think in the next part, the word "pylons" is meant as "panties" but so as not to be too obvious and to keep the true meaning symbolic in hiding, they used "pylons". So, "tall woman, pull the panties down". Then the rape part happens... eek. "And wrap them around the necks of all the feckless men that queue to be the next". So the panties are pulled off of the woman (rape) and then wrapped around the men (to encourage them) who queue to be the next (next members of the Mandela Men).

Pretty terrible stuff. But I think the song and band get a free pass because it's poetry and in poetry you can basically do whatever tf you want lol.

@[Mausman:4243] I believe you're correct about all that. Also, in the part that goes

"That's me in the corner
That's me in the spotlight"

I think it's him trying to get her to notice him. He's exclaiming to her that it's him in the corner, in the spotlight, look at him.
Also in the part that goes

"Oh no I've said too much
I set it up"

I think this is him worrying about what he said to her when he attempted to strike a conversation. It's just typical worrying about what to say to a girl and what not to say, how it should go and he thinks he's messed it up. And then he confesses that the conversation wasn't started naturally but that he set it up.
