@[glovemitten:23770] Probably not true, but yours is definitely the most moving interpretation of this song! :)

@[friedak:18838] I like your interpretation of a song that offers many interpretations. Actually, Ruess has attributed Paul Simon as an influence for this song, see: http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/497080/whats-next-for-fun-next-single-has-paul-simon-roots

fun. – Some Nights Lyrics 7 years ago
@[Maelglon:18837] I really like your explanation about this song's meaning and origins. However, if you think this song is not about war, then you probably haven't seen the music video. (Cause' it's exclusively about the American Civil War!) Ultimately, I think there can be different interpretations of this song's meaning, and Fun probably intended for it to be that way all along. ;)

Olivia Newton-John – Physical Lyrics 8 years ago
@[goddesscaroline:6766] - You're right. I remember rockin' to this song when I was a kid. I always thought it was about jazzercise. I only read the lyrics, "There's nothing left to talk about 'less it's horizontally," today for the first time. It's pretty obvious what she's implying.

@[vulnavia:6767] - So, I wanted to verify that my beliefs about jazzercise were wrong by re-watching the video for the first time in 30 years. You're right, it is pretty funny. But I think there's a deeper meaning to this song:

In the video, OLJ starts out fantasizing about a bunch of hot, sweaty, speedo-clad muscle-men. The scene changes and she's surrounded by several overweight slobbish guys poorly attempting to work out. She then tries to help out the overweight guys, taking a physical trainer role.

It's the end of the video that really tells the deeper story. In the last scene, all the overweight guys are magically transformed into their muscle-clad counterparts, but then something poignant happens: the hot guys all pair up into couples and walk out of the gym holding hands with their partners! I'd say this is a somewhat precocious twist for 1981! Finally, OLJ goes back and finds a tall, dark, overweight guy and "hooks up" with him.

So, I think the real meaning of this song is to bemoan that she can't get what she thinks she wants in her fantasy. After all, the really sexy men are all gay. So she must settle for a mediocre-looking guy if she wants to ever get some action.

A Great Big World – Say Something Lyrics 8 years ago
@[CatLiddle:5689] Thank you for posting this. It helps when we get the opinion from the people who actually wrote the lyrics.

Although, I think that a synergy emerges between the songwriters and the audience where the listeners add their own experience to the message and in the end, the sum of the meaning is greater than the individuals who experience it.

Cocteau Twins – Theft, and Wandering Around Lost Lyrics 8 years ago
@[saatwik:5638]: I think you're on the right track, but perhaps it's about more than just one sexual encounter.

These lyrics make me think about the new (2015) documentary, "Hot Girls Wanted." (Search for it on IMDB) It is about women who have been drawn into the sex trade.

It sounds to me like the person in the song is regretful of her sexual activities, to the point that she is now contemplating suicide. It's a really depressing topic, but altogether very popular amongst teenage and college-age girls. This song probably gets a lot of play time by some people.

Maroon 5 – Sugar Lyrics 9 years ago
This is the millennial generation's version of Pour Some Sugar on Me. The lyrics of both songs speak metaphorically about various sexual activities. (Use your imagination.) This is, after all, the real meaning of the term, "Rock and Roll."

Makes me wonder if Maroon 5's backstage antics ever get as wild and crazy as Def Leppard's back in the 80's.

Jim Croce – Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels) Lyrics 9 years ago
You guys are all giving a lot of meaning to this song. So, ranceyoung, mypointofview, & jelaplan's interpretations are especially revealing, but so far nobody has mentioned the last verse...in this verse, he tells the operator what he would really like to tell his old lover, but is unable to do so:

"Operator, well let's forget about this call"
He's telling his old lover that he's forgetting about their relationship and moving on.

"There's no one there I really wanted to talk to"
He's convincing himself that he's over her and doesn't want her in his life any more.

"Thank you for your time, ah, you've been so much more than kind"
Even as he tries to forget, he remembers the good times they had and realizes that she really did do a lot for him when they were still together, BUT...

"And you can keep the dime."
Holding on to those memories hurts too much, so he's trying to throw them out, trying to get rid of any valuable sentiments that he may still harbor, so that he can move on, and maybe have some hope of getting over her.

For anyone who has reached this point in their relationship, these lyrics strike a deep and true chord. Incredible! Thanks, Jim.
