The Cure – Lost Lyrics 5 years ago
this song is about robert smith dating a girl younger than him, he becomes someone else around her to fit in with her, he feels like he is losing himself and wonders if this him could run way with her (be the real him with her). it's about losing yourself in someone your dating and having that person change you into someone you don't quite recognize as yourself anymore.

if the difference between":music" and and "noise" is emotion, than how do you rate the pyshcocandy album by the Jesus and Mary Chain? because it's definitely emotional and about a girl, but it's definitely noise also.... (PS Not a criticism becuase I love them also.)

The Jesus and Mary Chain – In A Hole Lyrics 6 years ago
I think it's about a sort of depression where you want what you don't have or what you lost, perhaps he lost who he was or what he used to be and he is romanticizing that:
Grass grows greener
On the other side
Corn grows sweeter
On the other side

and whatever he has or is becoming isn't what he wants at all--it may even be the opposite. He feels sort of trapped by it, like it is perhaps even preventing him from getting what he wants and turning him into someone who could either never achieve it or get it back:
And I watch, And I watch, And I watch
And I see too much
And I broke my face
And my head grows too much

and not having the things he wants makes him feel empty inside and like God doesn't like him and hurts him on purpose:
God spits
On my soul
There's something dead inside my hole
In my hole
In my hole
In my hole

It feels like he is losing himself in this lack of definition perhaps caused by realizing he won't get what he wants in life and trying to come to terms with that and now trying to find a new goal and identity:
I step crueler
But less defined
Striped cats cooler
But so is mine
And I want to see
What I want to be

he seems himself on the tv pretending to be what he doesn't want to be and it's taking over how he behaves and acts, his identity and desires are being manipulated by his public image of himself and he's losing his previous self and what he had needed/wanted to feel fulfilled in the process and he is starting to find something in he is starting to enjoy, it's not much though as the next lines signify:
And I see me on a touching screen
And I'm dancing to a scream

What little he has gained to help fill that void and loss of identity-not matter how small or worthless it seems to others or him-is now cherished by him as the only thing that currently defines him or give him any since of purpose/identity; It's all he has:
How can something crawl within
My rubber holy baked bean tin
It's god to me, it's god to me
It is heart and soul

@[rastaska:25130] oo and the kiss goodnight is him falling asleep on drugs. the drug is like a kiss goodnight. it's warm and comforting and negates all the pain he feels. jimmy says it's better than air is the jimmy persona taking over jesus (or maybe his general opinion on drugs, or something he states to the gang of punks that he leads and later abandon him on letter bomb)

@[jesus_of_suburbia:25129] it's a nice theory, but she's a rebel does such a good job at introducing whatshername that i really think that is when she appears.
I really think that this songster up jesus's new life as jimmy. story wise we kind of need to see what jimmy is now doing before moving on to his meeting whatshername. he's doing drugs and staying numb while she is a real rebel and so they don't work out.

@[megan9463:25128] I think you're maybe taking it a bit too literal. it may be BJ was using his life as a basis for a story that was set in modern times-lines in holiday were about the current california senator at the time so it is likely he is talking about bush also. He did grow up "under nixon and raised in hell" on 21st century breakdown, so it could be him also.
Saint jimmy and the jesus of surburbia are for 100% sure the same person. Watch the jesus of surburbia music video (uncut 12 min is best). Neat the end, after jesus fights with his girl and is about ready to leave, he goes back to this 7-11 bathroom he liked to vandalize and destroys it with graffiti. A the end, he writes Saint Jimmy, takes a razor, cuts his hand, and signs the Saint Jimmy moniker with a hand print of his blood.
can't help you on the girl, there was a breakup song about a girl he liked on kerplunk!-album before dookie, but that was the last one for a long time. anyway, the song is titled 80 and maybe it's about her? i can't really help you with this one.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Mayonaise Lyrics 7 years ago
Fool enough to almost be it
Cool enough to not quite see it
Doomed
(He's almost cool enough to be "doomed" (self-destructing and living fast) but not realize it.)
Pick your pockets full of sorrow
Run away with me tomorrow
June
(Let's take our sadness and pain with us and run away-maybe directed to a fellow friend, girlfriend, or listener who can relate to being depressed and wanting to run away, typical 90s angst)
Try, ease the pain
Somehow we'll feel the same
Well, no one knows
Where our secrets go
(There doing something they shouldn't to ease their depression. It doesn't work, the pain returns. This could either mean that no one knows how they feel or no one knows what they do to ease the pain-drugs, sex, etc)
I send a heart to all my dearies
When your life is so, so dreary
Dream
(When you are depressed try and dream about a brighter future to help relieve/ease the depression)
I'm rumored to the straight and narrow
While the harlots of my perils
Scream
(He is considered to be a stable person but deep down he has strong self-destructive tendencies trying to take over)
And I fail
But when I can, I will
Try to understand
That when I can, I will
(He fails at whatever he tried but when he is able to come to terns with it and accept it he will realize that all he can do is try to pick himself up and keep trying and hope to succeed eventually)
Mother weep the years I'm missing
All our time can't be given
Back
(He feels he's wasted time or lost time or is just feeling old and wondering where the time or youth went)
Shut my mouth and strike the demons
Cursed you and your reasons
Out of hand and out of season
Out of love and out of feeling
So bad
(He enjoyed feeling depressed and wallowing in his pain, someone tried to help him and he attacked their ideas, he went way overboard in the attack, now he wants their help again and is asking for that person to not let him attack his ideas this time and help him again because he doesn't want to feel depressed any longer)
When I can, I will
Words defy the plan
When I can, I will
(He has a plan, but his words-also actions?-come out contrary to it but he is trying to follow his plan regardless whenever he can)
Fool enough to almost be it
Cool enough to not quite see it
Old enough to always feel this
Always old, I'll always feel this
(He is foolish enough to almost have grown old and wasted his time/youth, but he's cool enough to not quite realize he's old, but he is old and he feels it deep down and he will always feel it even if he doesn't quite realize it)
No more promise no more sorrow
No longer will I follow
Can anybody hear me
I just want to be me
When I can, I will
Try to understand
That when I can, I will
(He's not going to be sad by trying to be something that someone else wants him to be anymore, he can't be what that other person wants him to be and it makes him sad to not be able to live up to their expectations of him and he is done with it, he just wants to be himself and make his own way in life and try to accomplish what he wants to instead)

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Taste of Cindy Lyrics 8 years ago
This song is not about drugs. He is singing about a girl.
He really likes this girl, and sleeps with her. She then leaves, and she is off seeing other guys.

Crack of dawn
Cindy's movin' on
Talking Cindy to everyone
Til she's had her fun

She is a slut and not interested in being monogamous with the singer. This really hurts him because he really likes her. It hurts him that she won't be exclusive with him, but he likes her too much to just end it.

She has me
We twist the sun and sea
Still she's talking to everyone
Cindy's had her fun

Though I've heard it before
Still I need you more and more
But I just can't get away
Cindy kills me every day

He thinks she is really sweet and it kills him that she could go sleep with other guys between hooking up with him. He tries his best to win her heart but is failing. She just looks through him to other guys. She wants to keep hooking up with the singer and seeing other guys at the same time. This causes his feelings for her to be painful, like a knife in his head.

And I tried and I tried
But you looked right through me
Knife to my head when she talks so sweetly
Knife in my head when I think of Cindy
Knife in my head is the taste of Cindy

Honestly, this is a really relatable song for me because my ex did this to me whenever we broke up, and I tried to to get her back. Most of the songs off Psychocandy are about a girl who hurt the singer. The drug songs came later (when they could actually afford to abuse them).

Sum 41 – Scumfuck Lyrics 8 years ago
sounds like this song is about someone going off the deep end with drugs,
there's a lyric error, it's supposed to be::
"You've cooked your silver spoon so black
So die."
which I think is a heroin reference, since junkies place heroin in a spoon and heat it with a lighter prior to injecting it.
Sounds like this song was written in the third person but may be about either the lead singer or a very close friend.

Placebo – Teenage Angst Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is about heroin.
The first verse is about a social outcast. He's a deer in headlights at social situations cause people see through his disguise and see him for what he really is--a misfit/outcast--so he is unable to fake fitting in or belonging.
The second verse deals with heroin and how it makes him feel. Because he doesn't fit in, he is turning to heroin to feel sublime (I'll stick to my needle and my favorite waste of time--this is clearly referring to heroin because what other thing would pair with a needle and pleasurably waste the user's time?).
I don't feel the "since I was born I started to decay" is intended to be ironic. I remember often feeling that way as a teen, and this is a 90s band after all--Nirvana was popular and teenagers were all pessimists. Furthermore, the lead singer was taking a lot of drugs and having a lot of sex back then, his poor health choices paired with a depressive phase of his bipolar disorder may have led him to feel as if he was actually decaying. This may have even been used subliminally by the singer as an argument to justify his choices--we are all decaying anyway so I might as well have fun; there's no point to trying to be healthy if 'm decaying regardless; plus, nothing goes my way so screw it! Of course, as a poor junkie with psych disorders from a broken home, things probably didn't go his way back then.

The Smashing Pumpkins – 1979 Lyrics 9 years ago
Ok, it seems like everyone has gotten some basic facts wrong about this song, so i'm posting this just to clear a few things up and make a few verses clearer.

Shakedown 1979
Cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
You and I should meet

Billy is being nostalgic and saying it's a shame there wasn't enough time for you to get to know him back when he was one of the "cool kids" and his life was energetic and unpredictable (on a live wire).

Junebug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end
To it all

Billy is now painting a portrait of his youth: he's driving in a car with his friends and doesn't know where they are going or will end up in life-adulthood just seems too far away as a teenager. A Junebug is an old car and it's skipping like a stone because it no longer runs well. Headlights pointed at the dawn is a direct reference to their driving without a destination and the fact their whole lives are in front on them.

And I don't even care
To shake these zipper blues
And we don't know
Just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed
Into the earth below

Zipper blues is slang for depression caused by always moving. It's a reference to being depressed (blue) because you're never in one place long enough to unzip your jacket. Anyway, he's saying he doesn't even care to settle down in one place. He is a young and doesn't know where he will end up or where his bones will rest. He knows he will eventually die and have his bones absorbed into the earth, but he has no idea where he will be going in the meantime and he seems to enjoy being young with his future ahead of him and not knowing what will happen. This could also be a reference to Billy being on tour with his band, and constantly going from city to city on tour.

Double cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in store
Morphine city slippin dues
Down to see

The vacant and bored are probably adults who no longer have the passion that teenagers have and Billy is saying he wanted to stir things up and change the world because it's become boring and tedious-they don't know just what he has in store for them.
(This may also be a less subtle reference to teenagers being mischievous and playing pranks on the adult world-the music video shows them vandalize a convenient store while a vacant and bored adult sits at the register oblivious to what's going on.)

That we don't even care
As restless as we are
We feel the pull
In the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement, lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we'd go
Beneath the sound of hope

They are restless teenagers with no immediate desire to grow up yet are getting pressured towards adulthood (the land of guilt and poured cement aka offices and buildings adults work at) and they eventually do get pulled into the into this world faster than they thought they would and they lost their youthful dreams and hopes along the way.

Justine never knew the rules
Hung down with the freaks and ghouls
No apologies ever need be made
I know you better than you fake it

Justine hung out with outcasts as a teenager. Back then, Billy had a strong enough bond with her (and probably the rest of his friends) that apologizes weren't needed between them-he was close enough to tell the apologies were fake anyway.

To see that we don't even care
To shake these zipper blues
And we don't know
Just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
forgotten and absorbed
Into the earth below

See above.

The street heats the urgency of now
As you see there's no one around

Time moves too fast; the times Billy shared shared with his friends as a teenager were all about being there in the moment disfranchised with the world yet having what seemed like infinite possibilities for their futures ahead of them. Billy and his friends have all grown up and moved on; there's no longer anyone around.
