I do believe this is about addiction but I think Metallica is pointing directly to what is causing the addiction or self medication. Sad is an acronym for Social Anxiety Disorder. When you suffer from this condition almost everything that is in this song is how you feel. Just a thought. Listen to it again with that in mind. |

This song is definitely about a drug trip. More than likely LSD or Mushrooms. Everything he describes in the song is the exact feeling you'd have on either of these substances. This song has nothing to do with another person. His best friend is the drug. When he says "Promises me I'm as safe as houses
As long as I remember who's wearing the trousers" this is at the exact moment when you get scared during the initial trip. If you succumb to the fear you'll have a bad trip. If you accept that the drug is in charge and let go, you'll have an amazing experience. Enjoy! |

I have a very personal interpretation of this song. I felt this exact same way my whole life being a victim of physical and emotional abuse as a child. Looking around wondering why no one would help even though they could see the bruises and change in my personality. Now as I'm older I try to deal with everything I've been through but you can't change the past. You can only deal with what your mind throws at you daily. Part of Breaking The Cycle is never doing what was done to you to someone else. |

This song seems to fit into exactly what he is saying. The Burning Man Gathering every year in Nevada. Look it up. It started in San Francisco in the 80's. I believe other songs 3EB has made also reference this like Bonfire for example. Enjoy my interpretation. |

This song is about wanting to share his life with someone that he loves. Purple is the color of royalty. Prince is his name obviously. Rain is a homophone he is actually saying reign. He is using this combination of purple and reign to signify his time on earth, his existence. "Purple Reign" and he is the Prince. I think this song is from 2 perspectives (child and father). The first verse is the child, second verse father. The refrain is the mutual feeling both are experiencing. Third verse child, fourth verse father. My son was born in 2001. I separated from his mother about 4 years later. The first time I heard the song I thought it was about a child. I was listening to this after our separation and I hit me that its both perspectives. |
