Tool – Lateralus Lyrics 5 years ago
@[cphillips1729:28165] This is a great interpretation. Thanks for sharing. Well written! This is such an amazing song. I get much of the same vibe as you. I also think your assessment of MJK's particular spiritual hesitations and beliefs are probably correct. Just my opinion, I don't know what the man thinks, but this song gets us close to a pretty true feeling, I think.

As a person commenting on this in 2016 (12 years after the comment above), let me just say, "Yes." The Meadowlands is still great after all these years.

Common – The Corner Lyrics 8 years ago
Only 1 comment on this masterful song? Great narratives, lyrics, rhyming. Common really paints some wonderful pictures of life on the South Side of Chicago with this song. Great beat, with rhythm that pulls you in as if you're going for a drive in Common's car while he tells you a story of growing up and living in (parts of) Chicago. Love this song.

Elvis' version is great. A classic. I strongly encourage those of you that love this song to not miss Nick Lowe's version. It's excellent in its own regard. Cheers, trl.

This is such a great song. Amazing opener to Copper Blue. The lyrics are far more thoughtful than I ever realized. The guitar was always the hook for me, but this is Bob Mould at some of his best.

Nick Drake – Things Behind the Sun Lyrics 8 years ago
I love this song. Possibly my favorite Nick Drake composition. So much meaning and depth. I love the line "Who'll hear what I say?" as if he knows this song is truth and dares the listener to accept this truth about life.

Say what you'll say. Find your voice. Do your part. Make your difference in the world.

George Harrison – Isn't It a Pity Lyrics 8 years ago
How are there no comments on this in the last 7 years? A George Harrison masterpiece. Timeless. Existential. Beautiful. For me, it's THE highlight of All Things Must Pass. Isn't It a Pity makes me reflect on my own life, how I'm living now, how I might live in the future.

R.E.M. – Find The River Lyrics 8 years ago
One of REM's best. To me, this song has always about finding your purpose in life. In the first verse, the lyrics appeal to the everyday working lives of the listener. From there, Stipe tells you parts of his story with beautiful imagery and an appeal to the shortness of life and the length of time. This song has always resonated with me to make the most of my lifetime as our time here is limited and the time of the universe is long beyond our comprehension. Notice the play between the lines "Is only just light years to go" and "We're closer now than light years to go" (We're *closer now,* emphasis mine on the key words). As if Stipe is saying your life is passing right in front of you and the time left of the light years is still long but already moments shorter....so get to it. Get to your life.

To me, this is likely the highlight of Automatic for the People. A song that I'll listen to when I need to appreciate the world and my small place in it for an unknown time. I hope this song means as much to you as it does to me.

Pearl Jam – Light Years Lyrics 8 years ago
A pretty straightforward, but beautiful song. Pretty underrated in PJ's catalog if you ask me. Nice chords. Beautiful lyrics that resonate with lots of people. It doesn't reach to the elite status among some of their work, but Light Years is one of the band's best.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight, Tonight Lyrics 8 years ago
This is one of the Pumpkins best. Billy (and the rest of the band) really hit a homerun with this song. It is timeless. It is about being human. The words are beautiful and relevant to lots of people's lives. It speaks to the human condition. [Some] people in the future will really appreciate this song because it speaks across time to many people.

The Wrens – Ex-Girl Collection Lyrics 8 years ago
Commenting only to declare the brilliance of:

"Where's Ann been?
She pours herself a don't-ask gin
No ice and light on the bitters
I'm done with quitters"

So beautiful. Captures a scene and feeling so wonderfully...

Blackalicious – Supreme People Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is just brilliant. The whole thing. The flow. The feel. The beat. The politics. Beautifully captures inner city life, its struggles, the violence it creates, and why those problems are so difficult to overcome. More people should listen to this song. Such perspective.

The National – Don't Swallow the Cap Lyrics 9 years ago
While I don't know the meaning of the whole song, I love the thread of hopefulness that weaves throughout the song "I'm evergreen," "Tiny bubbles hang above me. It's a sign that someone loves me," etc. There is an interesting (and notable, I think) element of recording and production in this song. In the verse that starts, " I'm tired. I'm freezing. I'm dumb. When it gets so late I forget everyone." You can hear a fuzzy background vocal following Matt's voice for the whole verse. At the end of the verse, the words "bright white" are whispered clearly (without the fuzzy vocal). They are the only words in the verse whispered in this way. Perhaps an insight into the meaning of the song.
