Neutral Milk Hotel – Oh Comely Lyrics 7 years ago
This is just based off an old fan theory (http://i.imgur.com/mmGZw.jpg) that I found fascinating, & even tho it be wack as hell, I choose to hear this song like that because fun! :D

"And will she remember me 50 years later
I wished i could save her in some sort of time machine"

If you imagine that line about Anne Frank, then imagine if he DID find some sort of time machine.

I always hear the line at the end as "Pour ourselves inside some stranger's stomach", which can't really be about anything other than reincarnation as siblings. O.O

So ye. His sister is Anne Frank. XD

But for srs, I don't rly know what the song is about, or care, rly. It's freaking beautiful & amazing no matter what.

10/10.

The Smiths – Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others Lyrics 8 years ago
I agree it's probably about breasts, and I imagine it's sung in a really sarcastic, mocking sort of manner. Like, 'yes, okay, there are boobs. Boobs are real. They're a thing. Let's move on now and stop turning every discussion into one about women and their tits'.

Like, "Oh wow! Really? Women have boobs? No freakin' way, man! Wait, you're telling me their boobs are ALL DIFFERENT? Holy hell, I don't believe you! This is a revelation!"

Someone said a bit with 'As if we didn't know!' was performed live once, and that kind of confirms it for me.

If I think of it like that, I can't stop laughing. So even if I'm wrong, I'm gonna keep on imagining that's what's happening here.

The Smiths – I Started Something I Couldn't Finish Lyrics 8 years ago
Pretty much the only Smiths song that genuinely baffles me.

Could be about something non-consensual, but I think I just think that because of the words 'grabbed' and 'forced'. The '18 months' (and the positively gorgeous 'fair enough!') make more sense in this context, though.

It also might be about an awkward and sexually inexperienced narrator trying to make a move on a girl, but failing. That sort of tone is implied in a few Smiths songs. 'Hair brushed and parted' instantly makes me think of this type of character, and the 'that's what tradition means!' could be the character, though not realllly interested, trying to fit in. However, the '18 months' doesn't really fit here.

I suppose if it were a guy he was trying to make a move on, the 18 months might make sense, since homosexuality was (and in some places, still is) a punishable offence at one point, but in that sense, the 'tradition' bit makes less sense, because homosexuality isn't exactly regarded as traditional.

Maybe it has nothing to do with any sort of sex/romance at all, and I'm just totally thinking in the wrong direction. :/

I don't know, I just like this song. I like the inhale before the 'fair enough!' and I like the amusing growls in 'that's what tradition means!' and I'm going to settle for finding this song funny even if I have no clue what it's about.... Though, I am SO curious to know what the 'three-word gesture' is!

The Smiths – Hand in Glove Lyrics 8 years ago
I don't understand how this song is necessarily homosexual? As far as I can tell, the genders of the lovers are never referenced.

Personally, this song fit nicely to my own relationship. We're very poor, and when we started dating, we were quite literally hidden by rags. But, we were young, and we liked to think our love was special, and more valuable than any riches. We liked to believe our love was one of a kind, and that the people who stared at our scrappy appearances with disgust would never know a love like that. On hearing this song, it became 'our' song. It fit so well.

Why can't it just be about romance? I'm fairly sure both heterosexual AND homosexual couples can feel like their love is super special and one of a kind.

Also, 'stay on my arm, you little charmer' is one hell of a lyric.

The Dresden Dolls – Delilah Lyrics 8 years ago
I'm not going to pretend to know what Amanda really meant, but I like to think it's pretty straightforward. Someone close to her is with an abusive dick and she continually goes back to him, regardless of how badly he treats her.

Someone very close to me has been in and out of a very abusive relationship for a couple years, and no other song so perfectly expresses how I feel.

"And said "Amanda, I'm in love",
No you're not,
You're just a sucker for the ones who use you,
And it doesn't matter what I say or do,
The stupid bastard's gonna have his way with you"

This is the most emotional part of the song for me. It captures how helpless an on-looker feels. You try everything, say everything, and nothing at all is going to save this person. It's a horrible, sinking feeling, the fact you are literally going to have to sit back and watch them be destroyed.

""You won't guess what he's done",
Is that a fact, Delilah?"

It's been happening for so long, that nothing they could say their lover has done would surprise you. You grit your teeth as they tell you about this 'new' horror, acting like it's so shocking the douchebag would do such a thing, but you know better and you're not shocked at all.

"7 years in advertising" - Pretty sure Delilah actually works in advertising, and since that line of work often uses neurolinguistic tricks and what not, Delilah should be able to tell when she's being manipulated by this guy, instead of remaining in denial.

"Unrescuable schizo, else you're on the rag" - Don't think that's supposed to be taken literally. I just think Amanda is exasperated with the fact Delilah keeps going back to this guy and 'she must be crazy' for putting up with him.

"If you take him home, you get what you deserve" - This might sound like victim-blaming or whatever, but truly, when you've tried a million times in a million different ways to save someone, and they refuse your help, perhaps even push you away and treat you like YOU'RE the bad guy, you become angry. You become angry because you don't know what to do, and it hurts to watch someone kill themselves and not be able to do anything. So for a moment, you think 'well, they're an idiot then'. It's the only way you can cope.

"Let's see how fast this thing can go" - This part, reminiscent of Thelma and Louise (probably on purpose, since Amanda's rather fond of references), shows that despite everything, despite being pushed away, despite thinking Delilah was stupid and unrescuable, she's still there at the drop of a hat. She'd still do ANYTHING to help her, if only she'd let her. It makes me want to cry.

Yeah, it's a pretty personal song for me and means a lot. Probably my favorite Dresden Dolls song, and I do believe it's pretty straight-forward.

Big Black – Steelworker Lyrics 8 years ago
I know I'm probably way off, but here's my crazy interpretation.
On a whole, I think the song is about dumb people being proud of things they did not do, and enjoying the rewards of things they did not earn.

'The only good policeman is a dead one, the only good laws aren't enforced' - Dunno. Yay, anarchy?

'I've never hung a darkie, never seen an Indian'- This person was not actually there to participate in making his country what it was, be it good or bad (but mostly bad), and I think this is a statement against extreme patriotism.

'And I live like this 'cause I like it, and seen too much to pretend' - Some people like to make excuses for their shitty behavior, but the singer is admitting to hedonism, plain and simple. He does what he does because he enjoys it, and he isn't going to dress it up with pretty lies like other people.

'You can't ignore the beauty in the things that you love, like you can't stand the hatred and the lies' - I don't really know. Maybe defending the beautiful things (whatever you fight for) from the hatred and lies (shitty people, shitty ideals)? That's all I've got.

'Have you always hunted with your hands? Can you show me what you've done?
Have you always hunted with your hands? If you catch it, can you kill it?' - Most important bit of the song, I think. People are prepared to eat the flesh, but many are not prepared to make the kill. On a bigger scale, people are happy to reap the benefits (consume, consume, consume), but are not prepared to actually do any work.

'You don't understand' - Self-fulfilling prophecy. >.>

'And I could rip you limb from limb, great big thing crawlin' all over me' - No idea, but it sounds cool, no?

'See, I'm a steelworker, I kill what I eat etc.' - People who actually lay the foundation for his country, people who actually contribute and build, who do the dirty work (again, be it good or bad). People who hunt with their hands and kill what they eat.

That's what I always think, anyway. It's absolutely my favorite Big Black jam. It's just too cool for school. >.>

The Divinyls – Pleasure and Pain Lyrics 8 years ago
Kind of a messed up song.

Definitely abuse, but I think the song is about how the victim tries to justify the behavior. As someone said above, I think the 'don't ask me how I've been getting off' line is to the listener, not the lover. I think it is a question someone might ask her, like, 'how are you putting up with this abusive person', to which the answer is 'it's a fine line between pleasure and pain'.

She's told herself this, because it's the only way she can still reason that the abuser cares about her. I think the following line 'you've done it once...' is also something she's told herself. Like, 'it's okay. He's hit me before, I can deal with it if it happens again'. A sort of 'the first time is the hardest' approach.

Also, I think the 'sooner or later I'll find my place' is in response to him saying something like 'you don't know your place' or some shit. Sooner or later, she'll learn how not to anger him, and be able to fix her face.

If you think about it like this, the album title 'Make You Happy' is suddenly really upsetting. Like, what someone is willing to put themselves through for the idea of 'love'.

Could totally be wrong and stuff, but that's always what I've thought, and though I love the song, it also makes me pretty upset. Someone I love is with an abusive partner, and she tells me 'at least he loves me'. It's heartbreaking, and this song always comes to mind.

Placebo – Slackerbitch Lyrics 9 years ago
Really like this song.

I think it's pretty straight forward.

The dude isn't even that interested in women, but gets pretty high with some girl (probably friends) who's obsessed with him (despite knowing he's not really into ladies, hence the faghag) and they do end up sexing and stuff, due to too much cocaine..
And she's a desperate little whore who keeps coming back afterwards, even though she knows he doesn't roll that way, and even though she knows he just used her.

The dude feels bad about it, cause he had no intention of sleeping with her, didn't mean to. The friendship is all messed up and she feels betrayed because he pretty much lead her on.

He still finds her pretty pathetic though, even though he feels bad, because she's the one who tried to turn him onto ladies in the first place, and she's the one so desperate as to keep coming back to a guy who blatantly used her.

^.^ I like it. I find it kind of sexy.
