Pete Yorn – New York City Serenade (Bruce Springsteen cover) Lyrics 4 years ago
Wow no comments on this song!!! Pete did a fantastic cover of this Bruce classic. I love Bruce. Seen him in concert 19 times. He is one of the greatest American songwriters ever. But Pete really sings the hell out of this song. Strips it down with just an acoustic guitar and a harmonica and delivers a haunting vocal. Dare I say the I even like Pete's version better than Bruce's? He sang like a true Jersey boy would.

Hearing Pete sing this one made me seek out his original material. Loved musicforthemorningafter. If you haven't heard Pete's NYC serenade you should seek it out. It is simply fantastic!

Hozier – Someone New Lyrics 4 years ago
My thinking is this - the singer is manic depressive or bipolar (only has blue and black days) and his girl knows this before they get involved. But she is in for the ride anyway cuz she loves him regardless. The singer - in the depths of his depression - always finds a way to love her everyday in a new way because she always seems different to him when he's out of sorts. And when he bounces back some from the depths of depression - he loves he even more cuz she stood by him and loved him through all his crap. So he sees her a little differently each time and he loves her even more every time in a new way. In that way, she's always new to him.

Just my thoughts. Catchy as hell chorus. Can't get it out of my head now.

Counting Crows – Colorblind Lyrics 5 years ago
Saddest fuckin' song ever. Perfect song to put on when you are feeling down and just want to feel down - this song will keep you there. I used to love listening to this when I was drinking and smoking and feeling like my life sucked and I needed to get things going. I always thought Adam was severely depressed and wouldn't make it through the ups and downs of being a musician. This song feels like he's on a downswing - but he ends with 'I am fine' which I guess proves he is stronger than I thought. He can take the ups and downs. He even knows how to write peppy upbeat songs (i.e. Accidently in Love). He is truly talented and I am glad he's still going and gracing us with his raw emotional style of song writing.

Journey – Send Her My Love Lyrics 5 years ago
Heard this for the first time in a really long time today. Made me think of my first 'adult' gf. She was a big Journey fan. I thought I really cared for her - but I think to her I was just another challenge and once I gave her what she wanted she was gone. Twenty years later and I still think of her once in while - and this song brought it back today. I moved on long ago and in a better direction for me - but if I could I would 'Send Her My Love'. She's not haunting me - but I wish her nothing by the best.

Bruce Springsteen – New York City Serenade Lyrics 5 years ago
Holy crap is this a great song. One of those that can have many meanings - as I've read Bruce say in interviews 'once you let them out into the world they can mean many things to many different people'. I think all the thoughts above make sense. It has a drug under current in it - but to me it's just what the title says. It's a NYC story about Billy chasing his dreams in NYC, maybe getting lost along the way doing something sketchy. Walking tall and doing what he has to do to get by. By the end - Jackie tires of the life and they part. She won't take the train for him. But he walks on.

To me the Walk Tall, Walk Proud, Walk On theme is the key to this song. Billy's walking tall in NYC trying to be strong while chasing whatever he's after. Then he walks proud as he thinks he's going find whatever he's looking for. Billy & Jackie part - but he walks on and starts singin' and shakes off the city life. He's starting over chasing the dream or a new dream somewhere else.

Pete Yorn's acoustic version is probably the best cover of a Bruce song that I've ever heard (except maybe for Johnny Cash's Further Up the Road). I think I might even like Yorn's version better than the original.

Kenny Loggins – Danny's Song Lyrics 5 years ago
I love this song. It takes me back to being a little kid in the late 70s and hearing this on the AM radio in the car with my Mom. It stuck me then how much this related to my parents. Mom was 17 when the married and my Dad was 19. They had three kids within the first 5 years of their marriage. Things were really tight when they were first married and they had no money. I was the only boy and born in late Feb, so I'm a Pisces so I think I related to it that way too.

I read an interview Kenny Loggins gave and in it he said this song was inspired by his brother. His brother had written him a letter telling him that his first on was on the way. Kenny said he could just fell the pride jumping off the page - and he sat down and wrote this song about his brothers' life with his new wife and first son on the way.

Ed Sheeran – Supermarket Flowers Lyrics 6 years ago
Every once in a while a song will really touch me. Make me feel something I did not know was there. This one did it for me. Not even sure why. My mum is still alive and well. I wasn't close with my grandparents and though it hurt when my dad died, he went fast from a heart attack and never even made the hospital. Nothing like the scene in this song.

Yet I can see with crystal clear clarity everything Ed is singing about on this one. And it makes me feel both sad and happy. Sad that someone is feeling the loss. Happy that they had that much love for someone.

So, this is another one on a list of 4-5 songs that make feel things even if I haven't experienced them or even wanted to feel the loss. Well done Mr. Sheeran. That's song writing excellence that you've achieved with this one.

Ed Sheeran – Even My Dad Does Sometimes Lyrics 6 years ago
Wow only one comment on this beautiful song. I think Mochemon has the meaning down well. I just had state wow - for Ed this is a throwaway song to be included in the bonus tracks section on the record. This song is F ing brilliant and shouldn't be overlooked. Many artists would write this and build an album around it. Ed simply includes it as a bonus.

Bruce Springsteen – Book Of Dreams Lyrics 7 years ago
Wow - no comments on this one! Such a beautiful song. Bruce wrote in advance of his wedding to Patti. I know a lot of die hards rag on the Human Touch/Lucky Town albums. And yeah they might have sounded cooler with the E Street band behind him - but damn they still had some great songs one them (including this one). Dion Dimucci of Dion & The Belmonts fame did a great version of this one.

Bruce Springsteen – A Good Man Is Hard To Find Lyrics 7 years ago
I saw Bruce sing this one live (I believe the one & only time he did it live) in St. Paul MN on the Devil's & Dust Tour. It was a great performance - real close to he recorded version on Tracks. But the coolest part was that Bruce dedicated to the family of Gerald Vick - a St. Paul police officer who had been killed in the line of duty two days prior to the concert.

I thought that was an incredibly classy move by Bruce considering all of the backlash he received in the couple years prior to that show after playing 41 Shots on the Rising tour.

It's also a great song (hard to believe that it didn't make on a record until Tracks) and a true statement - A Good Man Is Hard To Find!

Warren Zevon – My Ride's Here Lyrics 7 years ago
So I gotta say that I am not familiar with everything in Warren's song book. I loved his big hits but never really dug deeper into his other songs. Then about six months ago I heard a cover of this song that Bruce Springsteen did after Warren passed on. After hearing this the first time - it has stuck with me for the past six months. I've listened to at least a few times each week since then. I think it's one of the most poetic songs I've really listened to - and about a subject that's nearly impossible to speak eloquently about.

It just goes to show what a unique talent Warren was. I hope when my time comes I can show half of the class that Warren had and that I can catch my last ride with the dignity he had,.

The Temptations – I Wish It Would Rain Lyrics 8 years ago
So I heard a story on the 60s channel on Sirius. They said that the piano intro for this song was written on a piano with a few broken keys. It just amazes me how Motown could create that type of environment. A depressed songwriter + busted equipment + talented producer + gifted vocal group = a beautiful artistic piece that is still cherished 45+ years later.

I don't think you can duplicate that running sound samples through protools & autotune

Ed Sheeran – Photograph Lyrics 8 years ago
'And if you hurt me, well that's okay baby, only words bleed' is one of the best lines I've heard in a song in a long long time. Ed's a hell of a writer.

That line seals this song for me. It's pretty clear to me that Ed's reflecting back on a relationship that is no more. They have their memories and photographs to document the love they shared - and even though she hurt him he wouldn't trade the blood that her words bring for anything because the love he felt during the relationship - and documented in the photograph - made the pain worth it. Their love is now part of his soul.

Brilliant!!!!!!!!!

Stevie Wonder – I Was Made To Love Her Lyrics 8 years ago
I just heard this again today. Wow. The passion in Stevie's voice when he's delivering the lines is incredible. You really get the sense he's thinking of his first true love as he singing this song.

And the lyrics are something anyone who has truly been in love can relate to. My favorite all time Stevie song.

Wayne Newton – Daddy, Don't You Walk So Fast Lyrics 8 years ago
What - No love for Wayne Newton ???

This may not be his most well known song - but it is classic 70s story song. I heard it again today on a replay of America's Top 40 from 1972 with Casey Kasem on Sirius on 7 - and I had to stop and look it up.

One of the ultimate cheezy song of the 70s - but the way Wayne delivers it gets me every time.

Dusty Springfield – You Don't Have To Say You Love Me Lyrics 8 years ago
Just heard a story on this one. Dusty was supposedly in Italy and heard an Italian song called lo Che Non Vivo by Pino Donaggio. She loved the melody but couldn't relate to the Italian lyrics - so she brought a copy of it back to England and asked two friends of hers to write English lyrics to the melody. They ended up with this. Love this song.

Joe Cocker – Darling Be Home Soon Lyrics 9 years ago
Wow - no comments on this beautiful song. I heard John Sebastian's original version on the radio today (which is great) but it made me realize how fantastic Joe Cocker made this song. He had a way of taking a simple love song written by someone else and knocking it out of the park and making it his own. Hearing it today made me think of all the times when I was a little kid and heard Joe Cocker's love songs playing on the radio. That great gravelly voice of his - I loved it.

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Lookin' Out My Back Door Lyrics 9 years ago
My all time favorite CCR song. I remember first hearng this in the late seventies when I was four or five years old, riding in my Dad's old Chevelle and him playing this on the 8-track. I loved the song then - and thought it was just a blast to sing along with. Dad's been gone for eight years now - but every time I hear this song I think of him and riding in his old blue Chevelle with this blasting on the 8-track.
