Marilyn Manson – The Beautiful People Lyrics 7 years ago
@[UltimateLyricGuru:18526] Absolutely. Was just saying something along those lines in another comment. Neat to see that someone else interpreted it in this broader sense. Then again, since I now found someone I agree with, I guess I must rebel against this idea :P

Marilyn Manson – The Beautiful People Lyrics 7 years ago
@[JohnnyRader:18525] Not sure of Manson's intent, but I think the song can be interpreted in a much broader sense. I have developed a bit of a misanthropic perspective, so I tend to interpret these lyrics in a way that they could apply to any group of self righteous people.

As of late, I think that this song applies to what the leftists have become. Just another group of fools for me to abandon. They create echo chambers (can't smell their own shit). The size of the steeple is just the number of people they have amassed, using their numbers to justify their righteousness. Using the weak to justify the voice of the strong is probably the most fitting for this particular case. And don't they just define themselves as having such beautiful hearts with a "Love Trumps Hate" slogan, while they hate on Trump and his followers. Well, I hate all of them. Every last damn human. Maybe the robots will do a better job if we can finish them before we destroy ourselves. At least they are logical.

I don't actually hate people on an individual level, but I certainly despise any organized group with a directed purpose. And thus this, can also be applied to any religious group. And at this point, I am just frustrated with the amount of senseless conflict between everyone. Hypocrisy is at an all time high, and I have failed to get people to look in the mirror. Well, I know I am a horrible little creature, and I like it. I can’t deny my dark side, so I choose to embrace it instead.

I Would Set Myself on Fire for You – Song Seven Lyrics 9 years ago
Anybody else think this sounds like the final chorus? I took the phone numbers and translated them into the corresponding dial tone. Timing is off of course, but seems to follow the meoldy, which would confirm it to be a phone number, cleverly encoded into the music tones itself.

I thought German phone number at first, but just had another thought. Maybe it corresponds to notes in the song, with 1 being the root note and the other numbers being other positions in the scales used. Can't quite tell by hearing and will have to chart out and play the notes to verify, but seems to ascend and descend in tone properly.

Nine Inch Nails – Heresy Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this song is more about Atheism than anything else. It was at least a song that helped me feel more affirmation when I first questioned religion. Always helps to know that someone else feels or thinks the same when you start crossing into the forbidden thought realm.

It's a shame that it targets Christianity, but I think that just a side effect of the Trent being American, and Christianity is the dominant religion here, so he is exposed to more of the hypocrisies in Christianity than any other religion. I think the same lyrics can be applied other religions though.

As most atheists and some agnostics believe, all religions were just created by people to explain the unexplainable and to control other people. As a former atheist (now somewhere in the agnostic territory), this song makes perfect sense and was how I used to see things when I first encountered depression and started to question the presence of a God.

The first verse seems to fixate more on the idea that religion is man made.

He sewed his eyes shut because he is afraid to see
He tries to tell me what I put inside of me
He's got the answers to ease my curiosity
He dreamed up a god and called it Christianity

It's hard to believe that there is a benevolent God in control when there are so many things in this world that bring about suffering. I think the second verse really captures this.

He flexed his muscles to keep his flock of sheep in line
He made a virus that would kill off all the swine
His perfect kingdom of killing suffering and pain
Demands devotion atrocities done in his name

Hope this helps explain another side of the anti religious tones in this song. I was actually turned off by Atheism myself later as I found that most atheists can be just as stubborn as some Christians about their beliefs and can be just as fanatical.

I don't believe you can prove or disprove the existence of God. Just believe what you want or what makes sense to you, let others do the same, and we should all be good.

I don't think they are stupid. They are just on drugs most likely and that is one way to interpret the song.

This song is most definitely about ....... drugs!

Think it just depends on who is listening. To you, it is a song about a relationship, which I never would have thought. To me, it's more about self hatred and apathy.

I see it more as the perspective of the narrator talking to himself. His desires are taking precedence over other aspects of life, because he doesn't care anymore. And if it was about a drug, I would say it's alcohol, because that's when my own little Mr. Self Destruct comes out. Though mine is more like Archdemon Self Destruct or Señor Self Destruct, depending on the day and type of alcohol consumed to bring about the transformation.

Don't take up all this page space with your narcissism, it's time to talk about "me". Err, just kidding. Nothing wrong with talking about yourself. It's the only way to find someone that understands and listens.

Interesting interpretation of the song though. Never saw the narcissism in it. Maybe because I am more acquainted with self destruction and apathy. I think a lot of us can see ourselves somewhere in this song. It definitely has tones of a loss of self control. Sounds like the narrator is very impulsive as well.

I like the line by line interpretation.

I always thought of "everyone I know goes away in the end" being more of the fact that in death they no longer exist, depending on your view of what life and reality is.

I like how the abstract can be interpreted in so many ways. I never knew that dirt was a term for heroin. I think of the Empire of Dirt as being a way of looking back on one's accomplishments over a lifetime and seeing them as worthless.

Sorry for the double post. I thought I was fixing the typo on my original. This site could use some improvements. No way to delete the old one, so its encased here forever now, so that Grammar Nazis can poke at it and please their twisted desires to make others feel inferior for not proof reading :P

I never thought of "the needle tears a whole" as being a drug reference myself either. I thought of it more as actually inflicting pain upon oneself. Much in the way that many people have cut themselves in times of suicidal thought. Why not use a needle. It's actually quite soothing.

Yes, only singers count as musical Gods. If you can't use your voice as an instrument, you can only obtain Demi-God status. Just a harsh fact of life. Though, in the case of Trent, it does make sense as he is pretty much a solo artist behind a band name.

And I totally forgot about Tool. They seemed to disappear when music evolved into the next level of digitalization. I hear you can only find them in the some relic format that involves lasers and discs or something like that. I really wish they would move on actually. I miss listening to Tool, but I am equally as stubborn as them. If music is not on Rdio, then it ceases to exist in my world.

Hmm, just wanted to drop one other interesting thought. There are actually more comments on the NIN version than the cover of the song on this website. I would have thought this one was more popular, but could be that fans of the original are just more passionate about it.

In reference to dpartn's comment, I think it's a bit of an exaggeration to say "nobody" will have a clue who Nine Inch Nails was. The band is legendary within it's scene. I actually never heard of Johhny Cash before he made this release, but knew who NIN was about a decade or so before this remake. All just depends on where you fall in life. I do agree that in 20 years, less people will be aware of the NIN version, but the same could be said about present day. And in 100 years, nobody will care about either.

I am in agreement with voltron in that showing disrespect to the original artist can be offensive to the artist himself along with fans, but he/she could have used more constructive language to convey it..

Johnny Cash – Hurt (Nine Inch Nails cover) Lyrics 9 years ago
The lyrics "I will let you down, I will make you hurt" can also refer to letting yourself down and hurting yourself. Much of the original album that this was taken from is about an inner struggle and the singer of the song is often talking to himself. Trent's album was a concept album and so makes more sense when you put that into context.

Then again lyrics are abstract and everybody can interpret it differently. When I first heard this song, I didn't get the heroin reference with "the needle tears a hole", probably due to the age I was then and what I was going through. I thought of it more as actually inflicting pain upon oneself with a needle.

Can you elaborate on how Cash gave it meaning? The lyrics are the same. He just covered it with a sound that is more pleasing to the general population.

The original song conveyed a lot of meaning to people like me who were struck by their first bout of depression in adolescence and turned towards the darker thoughts that Trent Reznor captures so well, particularly in The Downward Spiral.

Sounds like it gives meaning to another crowd as more of the American can probably relate to Johnny Cash better than they can relate to Trent.

So how exactly does it give more meaning to others anyhow? Really am just curious? Was a very cool cover, but I'm still more a fan of the original as it gives more meaning to me.

Nine Inch Nails – Capital G Lyrics 10 years ago
It is Greed and it makes sense. There are definitely references to greed since our government is driven by capitalism. The real voters are corporations.

This lyric is an overt greed reference.

"The more we let you have, the less that I'll be keeping for me"

Here is another greed reference as we all have a little bit inside of us.

"There's a lot of me inside you
Maybe you're afraid to see"

Anyway, that's how I see it.

Even this line can be seen as a greed reference assuming that it means to trade morals associated with religion for the one true American god, money and power.

"Turning in my god for this one"

G stands for greed. The quote below is taken from wikipedia

Though numerous reviews of the album speculated that "G" refers specifically to the G in George W. Bush, where the capitial G has a significant meaning Trent Reznor stated that the "G" stands for "Greed".[2][3][4]
