Lana Del Rey – Summertime Sadness Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Random observation, but every time I hear the line "Dancing in the dark in the pale moonlight" I think of "Green River" by Creedence Clearwater Revival: "Barefoot girls dancin' in the moonlight." Totally and completely different songs...but a similar line. |
Lambchop – Life's Little Tragedy Lyrics | 10 years ago |
An ambiguous song--but I think it might be about raising a baby, and being unhappy and unsure of what to do. ("He's not crying he's teething") These lines are heartbreaking: In the bed you lay Praying for sleep and it never comes It never works that way |
The Fiery Furnaces – Cut the Cake Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I find this song quite ambiguous. As the song starts, it sounds like she's heard something awful. But by the end, she's talking about celebrating and dancing. My first reaction was that she has read in the paper that someone she loved has married to someone else ("My heart stopped" and "Who cut the cake / Without any warning?") But that doesn't fit with the rest of the song, which is either about a major world event, or a celebration. I'm still not sure what it's about... |
The Velvet Underground – I'm Waiting for the Man Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I sometimes have to take the Metro North (a commuter rail line in New York), at 125 Street (one block west of the subway stop in the song). Whenever I'm waiting for the train, I always hum this song... |
Patto – The Man Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Great song that builds and builds. At first I thought "The Man" was the police, but if you listen to the end, it's more likely about a drug dealer--like the Velvet Underground's "I'm Waiting for the Man." |
Harry Nilsson – Me and My Arrow Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Hate to say it, but there is a "Puff the Magic Dragon"-type interpretation to this: "Taking the high road" is a clue, along with the "arrow" that is "straighter than narrow"--a reference to a needle. Still a great, and incredibly catchy, song. |
Spiritualized – Cop Shoot Cop Lyrics | 10 years ago |
There is more to this song! If you go through the discordant instrumental, the lyrics start again at roughly 13:00. ("The desert is any place without you...") I owned this album for years without knowing that. This is one of the darkest, bleakest songs I have ever heard. This album starts off with so much hope, but ends with this song about total self-destruction and self-annihilation, because of impossible love / addiction. It sounds like a funeral dirge, but it's still a gorgeous piece of music. |
Spiritualized – Spread Your Wings Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Beautiful song about the ravages of addiction / loving someone who is destroying her/himself. This song seems to prefigure the concept of the album "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space." "Silver Soul" by Beach House sounds very similar to this, and also links love and drugs. |
Beach House – Silver Soul Lyrics | 10 years ago |
This falls into the "love song" / "heroin song" category. He's falling in love, but it's like an addiction and he's afraid--hence the heroin imagery ("needle", "we feel it move through our skin", "it's a sickness".) Don't get me wrong--it's a sublimely beautiful song. But definitely about heroin. By the way, the sound and the concept are similar to the ending of Spiritualized's "Cop Shoot Cop" and "Spread Your Wings." |
