Modest Mouse – Styrofoam Boots/It's All Nice on Ice, Alright Lyrics 4 years ago
@[HiveNode:31394] It's also a reference to meth - there's multiple meanings to the saying, which is why it's the title. 'Ice' being a slang term for methamphetamine and Isaac's use of the drug during this time pervades the songs on the album - Trucker's Atlas and Lounge (Closing Time) specifically, in addition to this song.

Modest Mouse – Dance Hall Lyrics 4 years ago
One line is wrong in this lyric version, it's actually "I could give myself a shot, I could give myself a pill". Otherwise it makes little sense in keeping with the lyrical structure of the song.

@[roland:31378] Damn right. It took a bit but even Strangers to Ourselves grew on me, people forget this band is a slow burn. These songs are extended release, it takes a while for them to dissolve.

Modest Mouse – Cowboy Dan Lyrics 4 years ago
@utter imbecile Unless Cowboy Dan is actually a Native American. The song can certainly be read that way. The only lines that I view as more than 'individual' in nature are "He's gonna start a war" as in he's going to drink on the reservation and start a war between the tribe and the nearby community of (mostly) white people but that's pretty much the only line I view as directly hinting at some sort of larger narrative or larger meaning behind the Cowboy Dan character - everything else is purely internal - I think Isaac definitely feels the way you assume about the things you mention, but I don't think Cowboy Dan is where he's voicing it.

@[ThePython:18403] This song was actually written around six years before the first Gulf War. Claypool wrote it in the 80s. Possibly about all of the violent action in those regions at the time, the Soviet-Afghan war, Iran-Iraq war, etc. It is undoubtedly eerily prophetic.

Modest Mouse – Tundra/Desert Lyrics 10 years ago
This is the song that really got me into Modest Mouse. I remember giving This Is A Long Drive...a chance back in High School. And laying on my bed nodding off with headphones in as I listened. Well, I finally got to sleep and I get awakened by a big, "Awwwwww SHIT!" followed by pure cacophony. I'd never heard anything like it.

Modest Mouse – Edit the Sad Parts Lyrics 10 years ago
For me, the initial lyrics really resonate. Being diagnosed bipolar, I always felt a connection with the lyrics "Sometimes I'm angry that I feel so angry". I understand what it's like to be in the grip of powerful feelings and to be so fed up with it that you multi-layer your emotion. You become sad that you're sad, you become angry that you're angry, and so forth. Of course, you don't need a personality disorder to relate to the song, and obviously many people have, but it's always rung true for me. I believe Isaac is manic-depressive.
