U2 – Landlady Lyrics 4 years ago
Boy, he sure loves his landlady!

But in seriousness, I think this song is about the Holy Spirit. In Bono's religious songs, the Holy Spirit is always in the character of a female. See Grace and The First Time.

It's a beautiful poem about all the ways the Holy Spirit brings peace, forgiveness, and guidance.

U2 – Song for Someone Lyrics 5 years ago
As is almost always true, Bono's lyrics have many layers of meaning. Very often, his lyrics have a layer of Christian meaning. (I think of them almost as a Christian band).

I think the three verses of this song are all being sung to Jesus. Jesus is the "you" in the verses. This is very obvious in the third verse where he says "And I’m a long way From your hill of Calvary".

First verse - Jesus knows what's in our inner being but is not repulsed. Second verse - Jesus will reveal himself to you, and you give everything to him. Third verse - I'm a long way from perfect, but Jesus will always be the light.

The refrains are spoken to Bono and us - a motivation to not lose sight of the light. We are all the Someone...

Underoath – Wake Me Lyrics 6 years ago
This might be the one song on the new album that still has Christian overtones. I think he's asking Jesus to make him open to God's presence to wake him up out of his drug-induced stupor.

I especially like "I know if I let you in, I might be free again".

U2 – Grace Lyrics 7 years ago
When Bono sings about the Holy Spirit, he imagines the third person of the Trinity as a woman.

This whole song is about the work of the Holy Spirit bring peace and the love of God to people. She carries faith in Jesus to you:

"She carries a pearl
In perfect condition
What once was hurt
What once was friction
What left a mark
No longer stings"

The pearl is Jesus and Jesus removes the mark and pain of sin from us.

Oh dear this is embarrassing. First I respond to my own comment without realizing it, and then I post an empty comment. I can't find a delete option.

@[LibertyMark:19065] This is exactly correct, in my opinion. It's wonderful to see artists understanding what interventionism does. Thrice have always been pretty anti-war.

Thrice – Death from Above Lyrics 7 years ago
As others have said, this is about a guy searching his conscience as he carries out orders to bomb targets in far-off lands.

But the last stanza hit home for me. I'm a non-interventionist, which means that I think toppling governments and picking sides in regional conflicts often have the opposite outcome from what is wanted. It helps radicalize the people we are attacking.

Dustin is talking about that in a very eloquent way:

"Can’t we see? We only justify
Someone’s resolve to rise against
And to avenge the innocent
And defend the ones that still survive"

Wow.

Staind – Zoe Jane Lyrics 7 years ago
I just dropped my sweet girl off to college. We set her up, and everything was cool and fun. She was excited and there were no tears when we left.

Now this song comes on, and I sit here weeping. Did I do enough? Are you ready to meet all the stuff that will come your way? Of course, the answers to these questions are yes and no. Just the way it should be.

The love of a dad for his precious daughter is one of life's great gifts.

U2 – The First Time Lyrics 9 years ago
Many of Bono's lyrics are religious. One key to understanding the religious nature of the lyrics is that when Bono is talking about the Holy Spirit, it is always in the form a feminine character. See "Grace" from All That You Can't Leave Behind.

So, this is a simple song with three verses for each member of the Trinity: Holy Spirit, Jesus, Father.

During Zooropa and Pop, you can tell that Bono was having trouble with his faith but he never lost it completely. So, at the end of the song, he says he threw away the key that the Father gave him. But, it doesn't matter because every time you come back to God, you feel his love as if it's the first time. Always forgiveness, always acceptance.

U2 – White As Snow Lyrics 9 years ago
There is a very significant mistake in these lyrics.

The phrase "land as white as snow" is incorrect. The real lyric is: "lamb as white as snow".

The lamb is an obvious reference to Jesus.

U2 – Bad Lyrics 9 years ago
I've already written a comment here about this song, but I recently discovered something which brings me back.

I know the song is about heroin addiction, but it is also about a man facing a terrible choice: walk away from someone, and see them "walk away into the night", or stay with them, go through terrible trials, and see that person "break away into the light and to the day". I think the person singing is Jesus.

Now, after all these years, I have discovered the scripture that is the basis for this song. It's 1st Thessalonians Chapter 5, Verses 4-8. These verses are the bridge between the two meanings. Discovering this brought me to tears:

"But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5 You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet."

Killswitch Engage – Save Me Lyrics 9 years ago
Killswitch Engage are a bit like U2 in that their songs can be interpreted several ways. I am a Christian, so I often take their songs as having Christian meaning. Others with a different background will not see it as much.

However, this song seems to be pretty clear about the saving power of Jesus, in a pretty explicit way. Christians believe that it is through Jesus' perfect life and perfect love we are saved. We are made clean, and the past is erased.

So, lines like these seem unmistakable to me:

"To break the cycle I must turn to you
What I lack I gain through your virtue I gain through you"

and

"Shattered by the hate that I carry
Take me as I am and make me whole again
I am lost without a purpose always consumed by self
I freely give this calloused heart can you forgive me"

I find these lyrics beautiful and powerful and hope-giving. But however you interpret them, I hope they make you think and bring you something positive. Cheers.

Thrice – The Artist in the Ambulance Lyrics 9 years ago
Thrice's lyrics can almost always be interpreted in multiple ways, with each interpretation being valid. They're like U2 in this respect.

So, at one level, this song is a straightforward story of a guy who has life-shattering experience (the car accident) and it makes him evaluate everything and resolve to be a better man.

But I also take a spiritual meaning from it. I take "artist in the ambulance" to have three meanings during the song. First, it is the artist himself, "lying here shaking on this bed". Then, it is the paramedic, who through his skill and hands can help put people back together physically. Finally, it is God our creator, through whose artistry we are made, and through which we are put back together spiritually.

Deftones – Hexagram Lyrics 9 years ago
Like many here, I think this song is about a suicide car bomber and the culture and effects of the bombing.

But I think the main undercurrent is about how the bomber is young. The chorus is especially haunting to me. The bomber (under training, being influenced) is plaintively crying out: "Play! Play!" while those around him are commanding "Worship! Worship!" It's about how a young person who just wants to play is radicalized by religious fanatics around him.

And the part about his parents being proud shows just how far the religious fundamentalism can go. They are proud and happy that he is being trained and heading for a suicide bombing. Terrible.

This song is a work of art. A disturbing, powerful work of art.

U2 – Bad Lyrics 10 years ago
I know Bono has said this song is about heroin addiction, and it may well be. But, Bono has always been a master of writing lyrics that can have two meanings. I believe this song is about Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane before his passion. There are many, many U2 songs about Jesus and Christian themes.

The first two verses are about Jesus struggling with what he knew he had to go through the next day. In the Bible it mentions him praying that he wished "this cup would pass from me". He wants to give up, to let it go, but at the end of the second verse, he realizes that if he does that then people would walk away into the "night" and "through the flame".

In the third verse, he acknowledges that if he goes through with it, then people would have their spirits break free and they would go into the light.

But he still struggles, and he has to keep telling himself that he is "wide awake, not sleeping". That is, he is facing what is about to happen even while his disciples sleep.

In the middle verse, "If you should ask then maybe they'd Tell you what I would say" is about being questioned by the high priests where he wouldn't say much. Then, "Colors crash, collide in blood shot eyes" is about his torture at the hands of Roman soldiers.

The finally, the list of words starting with "This desperation" is a terrible description of what is happening to him.

But, the songs ends with him yelling that he is wide awake, and that he is not going to let it go.

As a Christian, I am completely moved by this song every time I hear it.
