Europan Leopard is a songwriter and composer who writes under the name "Vertigo Fox", and is apparently a leopard from Europa. Which would go a long way towards explaining certain... well, "quirks" is the nice word.

My own interpretation here is that this is about losing someone you care about to something like dementia or Alzheimer's. They aren't really gone but they aren't really here either, and you stay with them despite, in a way, having already lost them. You hope that maybe they will come back to you, and maybe you realize eventually that they aren't going to, but you still stay with them because it's the only thing you can do. |

@[XBlascidX:23887] do you mind if I continue where you left off? ... The second chorus has a pair of interesting lines as well as reiterating the main idea. "would you try to help me hang on" The speaker believes this other person in his life doesn't understand how much he is afraid to feel happy. He doesn't need remonstrations or criticism he needs help, and it isn't coming, probably because he didn't really ask. "It runs..." He isn't talking about the pain anymore, the "it" in this line is himself, running away like he knew he would. The ending verse has two halves. In the first half the speaker has convinced himself that running away is the best thing he could do for himself and everyone else. In the second half he realizes he was only running away from his own happiness, but makes the excuse to himself that it's too late to go back so he can keep running anyway. |

I think there's also a specific sense that trying to write songs about broken lives the same way he did in the 90s and 2000s wouldn't be true anymore because he has fixed his life in a sense. What's interesting is that I hear a line in the second verse slightly differently as "take/what you want/to deserve". That definitely would suggest some level of desire to go back to writing the way he did before- basically a desire to deserve less than he feels he really does deserve. |

Is there more than one version of this song? When I listen to it there are some lines up here that are very clearly not there. There's a pitch-shifted voice at the end of the second verse that I cannot understand at all (except three words) is this Ogre or is it one of the sound clips these guys love so much? What it says is most certainly not on here. |

It probably wasn't intended but the song really reminds me of the ending of The Shadow over Innsmouth. A lot of NIN's work reminds me of Lovecraft and the Cthulhu mythos though. I won't spoil that story for anyone who hasn't read it... |

I didn't know a phaser could do that. Now I need to experiment... I wouldn't disagree that the title might be a stealth reference to the ending section as well as one of the lines in the refrain... but it could more generally be talking about the mix of bit-crushing, ring-modulation and distortion, all three of which are sometimes called "destruction". Who knows what games he's played though. I heard he was a huge fan of Doom and I know he wrote the soundtrack to Quake... |

| "satisfy the arms budget" I could be way off base, but I can certainly see certain governments giving more money to their military than their military can reasonably use. Maybe to satisfy citizens who want to feel safe from attack even when the country is not involved in anything like a war. Maybe because the military itself is demanding a bigger budget and you don't want to not give money to the guys with the guns. Either way the military has to find some way of spending this extra cash to show their government that they "need" it, if they want to keep receiving the extra funding. | |
