I don't think this song IS about death, I think it's an attempt to allay the fears of someone who has turned away from their faith and doesn't know what awaits them, and is terrified it's nothing but darkness. I think he is letting that person know he will stay by their side, and will never let them go into the darkness alone It's tragically gorgeous and what saves it from sending you into an abyss of anguish is that the melody is so sweet. It really is a beautiful song. |

I feel Given to Fly is simply about triumph over adversity. I agree however that a lot of the imagery the lyrics convey is about his love of surfing. The music, too, always sounded like the distorted sounds you hear when you're underwater being tossed around unconsidered, by the waves. Whatever it is about, it's a beautiful, strong and emotional song. Inspiring, too. :) |
