Local Natives – Sun Hands Lyrics 9 years ago
I definitely see how this song could be about a second chance with a lost lover, and just appreciating that you had them at all.

But, as humans frequently do, I connect this song to my own current situation. I am in a long distance relationship with the most incredible person I've ever known, when I hear this song it always makes me think of her.

"I climbed to the top of a hill
But I had just missed the sun
And although the descending arc was gone
Left behind were the traces that always follow along"

This part I relate to the journey and sometimes effort that relationships take. Long distance relationships can get hard when you go through so much with them but only get to see them sometimes. Every time you leave one another after being physically together, it really does feel like you are missing something amazing, and that it's a temporary end to your journey, feeling let down at the conclusion (in a perfect world you'd never have to be apart). But of course they can't leave without leaving parts of themselves with you, new things to fall in love with, new memories to cherish (leaving traces that always follow along).

"The most beautiful colors chase the sun
They wrap her trail in a taunting gesture
That seems to sing out loud,
"this is what you're missing"."

Of course the traces that they left with you make you happy to think about and reflect on, but they can also hurt. She was just here with me, making my life so much brighter and warmer, now all I have is a cold room, her scent on my pillow, and her laughter ringing in my ears (trail of taunting gestures). I know that every moment that I'm without her I'm missing out on something beautiful.

"I'll endure the night
For the promise of light"

But of course, I would never dream of ending our relationship, even though it can be so difficult to be apart (enduring the night). I would wait for as long as necessary because I know I'll see her again at some point (the promise of light).

"I want to lift my hands towards the sun
Show me warmth
Baby, won't you show me warmth again?
And when I can feel with my sun hands
I'll promise not to lose her again
And even if the morning never comes
My hands are blessed to have touched the sun"

And when we are together once again I cherish her presence as much as I possibly can, knowing that she'll have to leave and the my sun will set once more. I promise myself that someday we will be together for the rest of our lives and the times that we are apart will all be worth it. But even with this expectation of our future together, if our relationship was to end prematurely, I would still cherish her. Her existence, her light, her warmth. How she altered me in so many ways for the better. I'm blessed to have known her at all.

"And when I can feel with my sun hands
I promise not to lose her again"

And if things go as planned, and we finish college, and our situations finally work out, we'll never lose one another again.

This might be my favorite "long-distance" song :) Thanks for putting the lyrics up!
