Tori Amos – Northern Lad Lyrics 10 years ago
The song is not about any of them. It's about a man she met at a lounge she performed at in LA " I can feel the West in you". The story goes that he came often to visit her and on one occasion worked with her on a lyric to another song with the word " west" in it. Thus the capital W. Their friendsship began to blossom into something more apparently. She also wrote China about him and Eric. They had a falling out because she couldn't choose between them. And then he dissappeared. " He moved like the sunset". So she had a northern lad but not exactly had. He was from Ohio or Illinois and I think also Mexico.
Then years later I was told by a friend close to the source that he did a fictional article for a fetish magazine that included several drawings about fetish hookers. One of them was a caricature of Tori as a leather Rock Star . The song Hey Jupiter may also be about the discovery of this article. I am told that his star sign was Jupiter. He pictured her playing a guitar. Thus the lyric " you go too far when pianos try to be guitars". and " I loved his secret places". How very strange and intriguing. Apparently she was quite taken by this man.

Tori Amos – Spring Haze Lyrics 10 years ago
I really like your interpretation. You may be closer to the truth than she might want you to be.The key here, I think, may be in the lyric "unseen this eternal wanting". Here, Tori may be expressing a deep hidden feeling for someone that she may only be able to direct outwardly through her cryptic lyrics. This person has resisted her (maybe for a long time) and so all they do is fly around each other in a circle that never goes anywhere. The Cessna is a nice touch, but I'm not sure what, if anything, it might mean.

Tori Amos – Gold Dust Lyrics 10 years ago
This is a song about a more innocent time. The metaphors about childhood are a reflection of that innocence. but it is also about a past (platonic) relationship she had with an older man who used to visit her when she performed at a hotel lounge in LA. My understanding was that he was in his 30s and she in her 20s. He allegedly gave her a photo of himself ( suntanned, so apparently the guy was athletic) so I am told. It was all very innocent but never developed into anything further. Tori may be reflecting back to that time, regretting the fact that nothing more ever became of that chance relationship because of choices she (or they) made. My take.

Tori Amos – China Lyrics 10 years ago
It is not about an abusive relationship. I know about the two men this song is allegedly written for. She is hitting herself for choosing one over the other. This was sung back in 1991, about 3 or 4 years after she made the choice. So it was still close to home. My understanding is that she has continued to regret the choice she made and it haunts her through lyrics of other songs. (I couldn't choose between the shower or the bath) for example, from Hey Jupiter. She chose Eric Rosse over this other guy, whom I believe used to come visit her at a hotel she performed weekly at in California. Very tragic , if this is all true. My source is a valid one.

Tori Amos – Doughnut Song Lyrics 10 years ago
This is not a song about an ex. Its a tragic story of unrequited love and it is on going, so I have been told . And is it possible that Tori may have cleverly hidden the name of her man in the title?

Tori Amos – China Lyrics 10 years ago
This song was originally titled "Distance" so I am told. It may have been written for two men in her life at that time. One was Eric Rosse. Some of the lyrics make sense about him. But he was never distant with her, so I have been told. The other man she met at one of the lounges she performed. This man, the story goes, kept his distance from her, though they sat together during many of her breaks. he was a bit older than her, I think, and going through a divorce of his own. Maybe they cared for each other but couldn't find a way to communicate it, other than through her music. Really tragic if this is true.

The remark about "strange Englishmen" and "apparitions of dead guys" is a reference to John Lennon and a slam at Yoko Ono.

Tori Amos – Hey Jupiter Lyrics 10 years ago
I think you're right from what little I know. This is a personal song about two real men in her life. One was Eric Rosse. The other is a mystery man. She sings to Eric because he will not answer her calls probably right before or during their breakup. What I do know about the other man is that Jupiter is his star sign (December) .He apparently did a caricature of her for a fetish magazine (took my leather off the shelf) and it surprised her. ( If my heart's soaking wet boy your boots can leave a mess). She did not expect this from him. (I didn't think I would have to be with you, a magazine) from the original version.
Then she did the Dakota Version, again narrowing in on this man (Dakota was the hotel where John Lennon was shot to death on the birthday of the mystery man.)" I know where the cupboards are I know where the car is parked," is an indication she knows where he lives (And sometimes you take a swim ) his home probably has a pool." I know he isn't you" Means that the man she sees now and doesn't like (because of his caricature of her) is not the man she knew before that, even though it is the same person. "Nothing's going to save us" means that all she can do now is hide from him with her lyrics. "I didn't think I'd have to keep with you, hiding" WOW ! Huh ? I would LOVE to know who this guy is. I wonder if she has written other lyrics about him?
