The Replacements – Swingin' Party Lyrics 10 years ago
In SongMeanings it is indeed a serious question. It has many possible meanings, depending upon one's understanding of the culture this song is rooted in. Among other things, lampshade is an old slang term, dating back to the nineteenth century, for a type of holly found in northern Minnesota and in parts of southern Canada. I don't know if the Replacements, being from those parts, are referencing that or not. If so, it may be like bringing your own mistletoe in case you need to be kissed. Pretty depressing but with its own glint of humor.

Thanks for that. I've been a fan of Ms Del Rey and her exquisite sound for a while and your statement is spot on.

To the question "What does this song mean?" I find that it means we have reason now to believe that what we can expect from Lorde is fantastic covers as well as her original material. She has one of the more interesting voices on today's scene. I'm looking forward also to hearing her do collabs with some appropriate musical artists, like everyone from Sting to Passenger! As for the Replacements' lyrics- this is one of their best and Lorde's treatment is superb. "Swinging Party" is filled with enough double entendres to keep analysis going 'til doomsday (all smiles intended) and yet it is such a simple statement, a muffled scream from dark recesses that still sheds considerable light on both urgency and hopelessness. I wonder if Lorde is planning to shoot a video.
