The thought that maybe he could hate her and love her was something i didn't even think about. What a great perspective. I was thinking that he is still writing from a place where he is still in pain, but you write that he is writing from a place of compassion. That's what i love about DMB...so many interpretations and each one beautiful! : ) |

This is my favorite Dave song and has become one of those songs that changes symbolism with each new love I experience. I believe that the song tells the story of two people who loved each other with everything they had. They loved raw and innocent but as we know sometimes this kind of love isn't healthy. Sometimes the people we are most comfortable with, are the people we are also replaying destructive patterns with. This doesn't make the love any less significant but at some point it must end. I think Dave doesn't blame her for leaving, he trust her decision that it is healthier for her. Seems like they started on the same page and somehow the female changed and realized it was healthier to leave. He hasn't come to the same conclusion and so still mourns her loss and in a way keeps hope that maybe she will come back by replaying all the beautiful moments. As if he is reminding her in hope that she will return. He also loves her so deeply, that he knows if life elsewhere is better, then she should go. It also seems like he is trying to reach the same conclusion but keeps coming back to blaming himself. "Did I do all that I could". Sometimes in love you can give everything you have and even if it doesn't last it doesn't mean it wasn't love or beautiful. It was, but sometimes love that takes you on such a high can also at times bring you crashing down. This song breaks my heart and mends it back together. I love DMB! |
